'I Heard It Thru The Grapevine' SMOKEY ROBINSON Recognized For His Life-Time Acheivements

see photo credit
SMOKEY ROBINSON  and HERE has been around forever, since 1955 or about 5 decades or so AND has achieved lotsa cool music over those years. NAMM [National Association of Music Merchants]  is giving him this life time achievement award in Anaheim, California at their annual convention. It's going on right now and runs through this Sunday. I found this story in MUSIC NEWS today.
It all began with THE MIRACLES in '55. Robinson was the singer/song writer and producer of the group. In 1972 he retired from the group to become the vice-president of MOTOWN. He enjoyed being a solo act after 1972. And, was inducted into ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME in 1987.
Robinson along with songwriter BERRY GORDY created TAMLA Records, that later became part of MOTOWN in 1957.
WIKIPEDIA says: " Until the late sixties, Robinson was teetotal, drug-free, a vegetarian and a self-described "health nut". However, by the time he was in his late twenties, Robinson began using marijuana. By the seventies, he was also dabbling in cocaine; however, Robinson said he only used it for recreation. By the early eighties, however, he had begun developing a cocaine addiction. Following the deaths of his father and close label mate Marvin Gaye, the demise of his marriage and his own career troubles, Robinson developed an addiction to crack.".
WOW, again I see that wonderful musicians, who first 'tried' marijuana went onto other drugs, making their lives so much more painful and difficult than if they left the drugs alone. Smokey had extramarital affairs, that ended in his divorce to Claudette Roger also in the group the Miracles that he married in 1959. Jan
I found 'I heard it through the grapevine' by The Miracles', [thanks KingRizlaa ]. This all it says on the video page: " Uploaded on Jan 27, 2010 Original version".
From WIKIPEDIA and Jan again....SMOKEY ROBINSON and THE MIRACLES were the first to record this tune, written by NORMAN WHITFIELD and HERE and BARRETT STRONG for MOTOWN in 1966, that version was was refused by Berry Gordy...then, recorded by MARVIN GAYE in 1967, refused again by Berry Gordy...BUMMER, Finally in September of '67, a GLADYS KNIGHT AND THE PIPS version was O.Ked and released...Right up there, number #2 on THE BILLBOARD CHARTS. So, Marvin Gaye's version was recognsidered and released in Sept. '68,.... hit the top of the charts and stayed there for 7 weeks. The rest is history 'I Heard it Through the Grapevine' by Marvin Gaye [thanks CatRevolver] became and still is a 'Soul Classic' but it was first recorded by Smokey Robinson and The Miracles. in 2004, THE ROLLING STONE put in on their 100 greatest hits list. Getting Ready To See School Buddy MIKE KARNES Tomorrow

Bartlett with glasses 1971, see photo credit
Once upon a time in the 70's, there were two really cool guys that got together to learn to play music. One played the bass, and the other wanted to play the guitar with that bass guy. This bass guy saw that his guitar buddy was getting really frustrated and just wanted to quit. 'It's too hard'...Oh No!
So, They had that talk, ..'.don't give up, you can do it', you know...cool...AND, the guitar guy listened to his friend.
 The 'Happy Ending' below.
Now, let's fast forward over 40 years.O.K?..what happened?
BOTH became real cool musicians. AND, that guitar guy became a full-time music instructor. MIKE KARNES teaches Bass and Guitar in the Orchard Park...Whoops, that's Port Orchard, not Orchard Park, and Silverdale areas. He drives a BMW, has a beautiful home out in the country, really has everything he ever hoped for. and, remembers his music buddy from long ago who encouraged him, when he needed it..and Smiles. Then, he happens to sees a business card about BARTLETT ON BASS posted in MUSIC 6000 in Olympia, WA. Could that be Steve?...YES, it's Steve.
They get together and jam. Karnes could just cry...he doesn't understand. Just look at Steve, his car's falling apart and lucky to get to the jam '85 OLD RED TOPAZ with a bungy holding the trunk down., the Topaz fills with water on the passenger-side floor board, for some unknown reason, runs outta steering fluid regularly and the transmission doesn't work right...it cannot be stopped on a hill...will not go up an incline from stop position..... [BARTLETT can't open the door, when he sees his buddy, but rolls down the window and crawls out with his bass to see Mike...Whoops, the window-thing was with our '73 Dodge Van, NOT the '85 Topaz. Jan SMILING from ear to ear]. Well, the music's awesome, just like old times. BUT, that bass of Steve's, it's old, dirty AND has holes worn into it, where Steve picks and slaps with his fingers.
Mike has an idea. See Mike's neat idea HERE from July 31st 2010. Jan

Weird Alien Music? Play Sci-Fi Tunes Here On Earth Right Now

See photo credit
I like to check GIZMODO every so often to see what's up. Well, this is what I found today. A really weird musical instrument called MOOG THEREMINI. the post said it's been arounds since the '20's, but got real popular in the '50's with those Sci-Fi movies needing all those weird 'alien flying saucer sounds'. Golly Gee [sounding like a kid]... Let's see, hummmm what 'alien movies did I like as a kid? I remember from 'The Day The Earth Stood Still' 1951 KLAATU's warning, [thanks Parsec777] of course, and that other one..'Invasders From Mars' 1953 [thanks steamer111717]. Bet, they both needed these flying saucer sounds.
I guess, this musical instrument is difficult to play, you have to'pass your hands over some kind of anteni without touching it ...Cool.
The video that I'll feature was put online just today on YOUTUBE. It's called 'Moog Theremini Demo', from BBoy Tech Report . This is what the video page says: " Published on Jan 23, 2014
Moog Music announced a brand new take on the classic Theremin called the Theremini which is digital and includes the Animoog engine. it has a pitch knob which makes it easier to play than a Theremin. It sounds pretty dope. A lot like the perfect blend between the animoog and the theremin" Jan

DICKERSON's Was Hoppin' Last Night...JAZZ At 'The Pig Bar'

Jan Rose and Steve Bartlett
It was 1 o'clock in the morning before BARTLETT came home. 'Guess we played 'til 'round midnight' he said glancing up at the clock.
I could tell he'd had a ball, you know, with that BIG SMILE all over his face. 'Tell me all about it' I said...then he began, as we munched on some cheese left from dinner. What a wonderful night of jazz...he ended by saying 'Boy, that place was hopping.'
Steve had checked...there's a handicap ramp to the second floor, where the jazz jam is going on. I'll be there next week, if my week gos well. We're gonna come earily and EAT BBQ first....YEAH....the perfect evening, food and music.
Maybe I'll see you there?
That's DICKERSON's SOUTH BAY BBQ, or affectionately called 'The Pig Bar' in Olympia, WA. Every Thursday night from 8 pm to 'round midnight. BBQ open 'til 9 pm. Jan

 see photo credit
Tonight's the night. Yep,...BARTLETT ON BASS's making an appearance at 'The Pig Bar', sometime after 8 pm, Thursday, January 23rd. That's really DICKERSON's SOUTH BAY BBQ in Olympia.
You know, the very first time that I heard someone call Dickerson's South Bay BBQ the 'Pig Bar'....well, I mean, well let's say, I was 'alarmed' that some folks could talk so disrespectfully about...you know...PIGS, anyway.., But, it wasn't disrespect at all. They were RIGHT ON, what did I know?. Yes, they were right....Pig Bar is good...delicious in fact..ah..BBQ'ed. Look, I'm posting the menu for 'the pig bar' SMILE, at the Dickerson's link...O.K?...Just take a gander at ALL that pig...WOW,..BBQed ribs, sandwiches and more, served 'til 9 pm. Come early, stay late...eat before 9, then stay for the rest of the jazz jam that would have started 'round 8 pm. [Steve said...he thinks this jam gos 'til 'round 11 or 11:30 pm].
Come on down, just to listen to jazz while you eat really good BBQ...or...bring your axe and charts and join those cool jazz guys that are gonna be down there tonight.. I know...do  ALL three. Eat, listen and jam. Bye, you guys, Jan

Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing, MARVIN GAYE's The Real Thing....My 2101 Post

see photo credit
Lotsa cool music this week...music's the real thing,..yep a cool vibration is always the right music at the right time....it makes the difference, does't it?  Jazz, blues, soul, doesn't matter....just as long as it's BARTLETT ON BASS.  Steve's loving working up these basslines this week. AND, I'm loving ALL the music and, that is, of course, whatever MY bassman's playing.
I'll find more about MARVIN GAYE for this post, running into alot of his tunes the last few days. Just because I'm wondering about him.
O.K., Marvin Gaye had a violent home life as a boy and teenager. His Dad was very religious and strick and would beat him often, the only bright light in his early life was singing, it was encouraged in his church and by his mother. He left home as a teenager.
He signed a contract with TAMLA, a part of MOTOWN in 1960 performing jazz standards, and had zero interest in R & B, Soul, or Funk. As his Motown tunes became million dollar hits, it looks like he changed his mind. He then became known as the 'Prince of Soul' or the 'Prince of Motown
He sang duets with MARY WELLS and HERE, and TAMMY TERRELL and HERE. Terrell was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 1967. She had several operations that made it difficult for her to perform. She died on March 16th, 1970 of brain cancer.
Gaye left music because of depression after her death. He wanted to quit music and play football.
Then, I found this in WIKIPEDIA... " It was eventually decided that Gaye wouldn't be allowed to try out owing to fears of possible injuries that could have affected his music career."
So, he went back to work in music. It doesn't say 'who' decided that Gaye would not play football, but, it doesn't sound like Marvin Gaye to me, does it? Jan

Equality.. Yeah...Honoring MARTIN LUTHER KING jr. '60's Civil Rights Tunes

by OakleyOriginals cc
Today I'm thinking of one of MY greatest heros of the '60's...MARTIN LUTHER KING jr., yes, a man with a dream. And, a sacred, lofty, couragious [spell?] dream it was and is today and always...FREEDOM and EQUALITY for all. There were some great songs written by those dreamers or beautiful troubadores, and poets of the 60's, who also supported Rev. Dr. King's dreams. AND, I'll post some links below. Jan
------------------
One of my personal favorite tunes from those times back in the '60's is a beautiful song by SAM COOKE and HERE called 'A Change Is Gonna Come' [thanks missbham205], many folks have only heard the newer SEAL and HERE version, to hear Seal's version of 'A Change Is Gonna Come' [thanks WonderfulHits]....AND, many have never thought of it's original meaning of this song...what I read was that Sam Cooke wrote it for Rev. King way back in 1963. Oh Yea...read MY story 'bout Sam Cooke HERE. The video page for that song says only: "  Uploaded on Jul 14, 2011

Sam Cooke A Change Is Gonna Come lyrics (1963"

More tunes that remind us all ofthe way it was then are listed below. I was so surprised that so many of these songs were later done by other musical artists and the original reason for the song...civil rights.... had been lost somewhere along the way.Videos by TPFThePeoplesForum  were wonderful and where I got the list of tunes below.  Check them out. Thanks. Jan
I think Rev. King desearves our repect and honor, remember, he gave his very life for equal rights for all of us people, no matter your origin or color, white, black, yellow, brown, red people or other even ...WOW. How many folks can say they believe in something so sincerely that they'd to do that?...not many I bet. HAPPY MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY. Jan and Steve

Weird Genius Stuff...Who, What Is GNARLS BARKLEY Really?...I Know, I Know

by Pat Guiney cc
A few days ago, when looking for a video for another post and I ran across this very weird video called 'GNARLS BARKLEY: 'Smiley Faces' [thanks DowntownRec] This is what that video page say:  "Uploaded on Jan 5, 2007
The 3rd single from Gnarls Barkley St. Elsewhere, nominated for 5 Grammy awards.
"You are the best. You are the worst. You are average. Your love is a part of you. You try to give it away because you cannot bear its radiance, but you cannot separate it from yourself. To understand your fellow humans, you must understand why you give them your love. You must realize that hate is but a crime-ridden subdivision of love. You must reclaim what you never lost. You must take leave of your sanity, and yet be fully responsible for your actions." -Gnarls Barkley, in a letter to the legendary rock critic Lester Bangs
Buy on Amazon-
http://www.amazon.com/St-Elsewhere-Gn..."

....I'd posted this VERY video before on this site..BARTLETT ON BASS before, but couldn't find it again now. It's strange and mysterious.  I thought it was fun and kinda weird But, I wanted to know more...just the point, I wanted to see more...it's very clever GNARLS BARKLEY.

I'd seen that face and heard that voice before, why it is CEE LO GREEN's and HERE face, isn't it.., that's the only clue that I had, so I started to search again today for more info., this is what I found... I LIKED this guy..these guys? The very first tune that I remember of Gnarls Barkley was called 'Crazy', [thanks MrElculver2424]..was that another clue? I wondered.  Just as I had hoped, it was another clue and a post was shaping up at the same time..wonderful. But, it was taking me along time...I just loved the music and videos that I found,.. and kept playing them over and over...ALL of them so entertaining. Finally, I went to WIKIPEDIA and read more.
'GNARLS BARKLEY' was NOT a person, just like the very first mysterious video said above...it is a 'duo, band, group, or bunch' and is/are made up of Cee Lo Green, a singer/songwriter, who's real name is Thomas DeCarlo Callaway and a music producer named Brian Joseph Burton, and he is professionally known as 'DANGER MOUSE' and HERE. They are called a 'hip-hop' duo...WOW, I like it--hip-hop, I mean...if it's what Gnaryls Barkley does...yes, I do. These guys are fun and clever. Another place on Wikipedia listed them as doing Soul, R & B, Funk, Altnative Rock and Indie Rock...anyway, whatever we call it, I like it. Here's some reasons why....Besides having a great sound, and interesting meaningful lyrics...well, they...they...well...
This quote says it best: From Wikipedia who are quoting a BILLBOARD article. " "Burton and Cee Lo have been cagey about what the name of the act means, and each live performance is an opportunity to play dress-up as tennis players, astronauts and chefs, among many other get-ups. The costuming extends to photo shoots, as Burton and Cee Lo would rather impersonate characters from such films as Back to the Future or Wayne's World"...yep, they are fun, and with all those costumes and characters new with every song and/or video, it is not just a song or video anymore But, A Complete SHOW.
I've posted several video links below of Gnarls Barkley and also Cee Lo Green as a solo act...listen to those tunes, and watch the show. Jan

The Bartolini GROWL The Whole Line Up For BARTLETT's...Jazz Tunes

by unknown cc
I'm posting this information, because folks are asking...AND, this is NOT an advertisement...just what BARTLETT ON BASS likes and uses, that's all, on his basses [spell?]. Or, puts on as soon as he gets a new bass.
He puts Passive BARTOLINI BASS Pickups, on his basses..... now that's the ticket for that deep growl on all BARTLETT's Basses that everyone's asking about. He likes a maple jazz neck on his bass, and uses ELIXIR BASS STRINGS....all these things together, is what gives him that deep growly sound. He told me tell you this. Thanks for asking you guys.
Today, we've finished 'working up' those jazz tunes, that he'll need for this week end. I'll post those video links below. Thanks again for reading about our music stuff. I love finding interesting things and posting them...O.K., it keeps me outta trouble too...well, almost. a sheepish...almost kinda SMILE. Jan

Those every third Sunday jazz jams at THE GROVE STREET BREWHOUSE in Shelton are over...they ended last month. BUMMER..soooo, this is just perfect. Isn't it? A new place for music for every third Sunday of the month in Shelton..
Where? It's gonna be at the SHELTON PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH...that's at 1430 Shelton Springs Road. The flyer I received says: Family Venue...so, of course, 'children are welcome'. There's a Piano Accompanist available AND, Look at this, you guys, there's REFRESHMENTS provided too.   O.K...that makes it final for me, food and music... bring the whole family out to the Shelton Prespterian Church this Sunday, 6 to 8 pm. and join BARTLETT ON BASS at THAT open mic..and me sitting near the refreshment table, eating and listening to great music, ...smiling.
BARTLETT ON BASS rehearsing more cool jazz tunes today and marching forward in a exciting direction, of course he can play anything as you can see  and hear, excellence in bass, that's all. See him at every kind of gig   but,.....yes, we can say, for today ..he's jazzed about jazz and learning these jazz tunes. I know, I've seened him 'jazzed' about ALL music..he does love music because he has just a natural love of  music, the music just oozes out all over him all the time ...Cool. Come see for yourself. It's amazing. Jan

Let's Wake Up...Why There's No More Social Changes

 teamstickergiant cc
This is an update about MY story of 1/13/14 about the troubadores of the '60's, go HERE for that story. Jan
--------------------------------------
What I kept wondering last night was...why? why did those music heros involved in such powerful and needed social changes of the '60's. [After all,...they were very effective and powerful].... need ANY drugs, pot or marijuana anyway? And, I came up with my answer below.
Well guys, this is only my opinion, but...Just look at my truth, for a moment, it makes sense...we hippies were...well, I'll just come out and say it...O.K? We were,...O.K., I was,.... and assume everyone was just like me, but I was a 'starry'-eyed', idealistic, goodie-two shoes, that just trusted EVERYONE without question, and never EVER even thought to look to see if others could have any other reason to be involved in social change, than MY reason...it was the right thing to do.
Those trusting troubodores were easily 'victimized' by those clever Music Record Companies, and/or Music Production Companies that saw 'Social Change' as a money-making product to be sold. They were out only for the buck and their own profits. Those over trusting hippie musicians signed contracts that gave away all control over the music and much their lives. Also, the contracts that were signed were stacked in favor of the Record Companies, those trusting troubadores didn't spent enough time 'reading the fine print'...Rights were given to the Music Production's Business men that weren't given to the musician including how many songs were required by the musician each year, when, where they'd perform etc., the tricky Music Production Companies could get rid of a musical artist at a drop of a hat, or whenever they wanted for whatever reason. But,The musician could NOT quit the Record Company at ALL or have any rights or say about their own music...only if the business men wanted it. Musicians were 'owned'.  For example: musicians had NO freedom or choises  like what, where, when they could sing, what they could say, and to who..... At least two different musicians of those times.... that we know today...have said that was their own experience back then. They were 'conned' or vicimized outta their music and rights with lotsa sweet talk about wealth and fame, and they trusted and bought it ALL hook, line and sinker.
I think that drugs and lotsa alcohol were first used to 'self-medicate', when the realization of what had happened hit home. Then, we followed our music heros without looking or questioning a thing either, like a bunch of sheep... Some say, that drugs were even encouraged and also seened as a Money-Making Product.
I remember that song from UNDISPUTED TRUTH [could not find any more links for this group], called 'Smiling Faces, Sometimes' '69 [thanks mosogotam] Video page says: " Uploaded on Nov 29, 2011No copyright infringement intended. If felt, comment below and I will remove this video.
The late great Norman Whitfield had an amazing knack for political and social comment. The Undisputed Truth was one of his favorite vehicles to express his opinions. Joe Harris served as main lead singer, with Billie Rae Calvin and Brenda Joyce. My extended version of this great hit".
1969...That's maybe when those 'hippies musicians' started waking up, and using music to effect social change like before were trying to warn us all with their music...but, it was too late. There were NO more social changes in the works by then, music contracts were already signed and being enforced. AND, We were ALL on drugs and stoned and just couldn't hear them,.. too much fun on pot and it too difficult to care anymore. Yep... 'Can you dig it? Everything was just GROOVY'. End of story. Jan

Oh..and now, in 2014...music, having a good time, drinking and drugs ARE almost always thought of all together. It's really 'old fashion' to like music for it's own sake. But, it wasn't always that way. Jan

Oh yea,...Steve says there maybe a better version of this song...I'll change it if I find a better one. Jan  Link to 'Smiling Faces, Sometimes' by THE
TEMPTATIONS or HERE, from DiscoNights1987, thanks. Jan

What Happened to The Troubadores of the '60's.....Know The Truth It will Set Us All Free

 Gustty cc
O.K....It's time to clarify something very important to me.  You know, we love music, and those couragious musicians of the '60's...the ones that fought for social change, those things we all enjoy today, that weren't there before those 'crazy hippies'....real progressive changes..civil rights, freedom and equality for all,...  that's for every race, gender, belief, religion,  age....o.k. even species, that's EVERYONE, and EVERYTHING, all 'life' has rights and is respected.
O.K.There's no need for war..just let everyone be themselves in peace. But, not everyone want the same things as I do.  But then, I remember being 'not served' in a restuaurant back in Texas in the early '70's. THAT was really amazing to me. It WAS a time for SOME social changes. Jan
 Pierre-Olivier cc
You know, I took a big look back to the '60's...for those troubadores who sang for equality and social change...what happened to them?...where are they all today? Below is what I found...
Well, it looks like DRUGS took them down folks...beginning with pot...you know marijuana, some even claim musicians were 'owned' and 'used' to control the masses, see  HERE for MY story about the king of soul, James Brown being used for crowd control in Boston at the time of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King jr. death. Or go HERE for a video of 'MUSIC OF TIME', a book by Preston Nickols/Peter Moon [thanks CHANNEL3X], or for more to read about 'Music of Time', go HERE. For another eye-opening book, see 'TRANCE FORMATION OF AMERICA' by Cathy O'Brian and Mark Phillips. Full text HERE.
Pot looks so inocent doesn't it? Feels pretty good too...AND, no calories. WOW...a high without gaining weight, no bottles to clean up, good to eat as well as smoke, no problems...perfect! Remember, we were ALL inocent back then ...AND, didn't understand it's 'down-side', BUT, now we do. We're older and wiser, aren't we?....cool.
First, those musicians that sang for change got loaded...then, we all followed them,.. our heros, and got loaded too...that's a great way to stop all social change or any personal change for that matter, isn't it?...get everyone high, they just don't care anymore....'everything's just groovy',..what could ever be wrong with marijuana, anyway? It's natural, maybe even organic... that means really good for you, doesn't it?
Hey, I'm an old hippie's after all, but I don't see me changing my mind soon. [NOTE: Wouldn't you know,...I changed my mind the very NEXT day, after I printed this, see 'Note' below. Jan]....so, for now.... everyone's free to live their life as they choose...and, that means, if you choose pot. I won't judge you, and, you don't judge me, you have your rights and I have mine too.
BUT with wisdom, comes responibility...look at what happened to those troubadores who started it all and the social changes we all enjoy now because of their courage. There's more changes waiting.
As a responsible hippie... I [Jan]...will NOT lead people down that path of drugs, when I know better. I gotta tell you what my experiences, then you make your informed decision,. This is why.... I choose NOT to promote marijuana or gigs/ bands that promote pot or are sponsered by pro-pot groups or businesses. That is MY right, and free choice...same as those that choose pot, I HAVE rights to say NO., just look at MY body, will ya? Now, I know that 'I'm really sure that I shouldn't of eaten the whole thing'.  Jan
I think it's just the right time time to post this...In the local newspaper,  Nisqually News....A headline read "'Pot Shops' Coming This Spring", THAT's for legal 'recreational marijuana' not 'medical marijuana' and this  is quoted from Nisqually News....." Retail stores selling legal recreational marijuana are set to open in the spring, and the Washington State Liquor Control Board, which oversees the stores, wants the state Legislature to pass laws that would make the state-regulated stores outlets for medical marijuana, too."  Jan NOTE: If this Nisqually News link gos down in the future [January 2014], go HERE.
--------------------
NOTE: UPDATED on 1/15/14....What I kept wondering last night was...why? why did those music heros involved in such powerful and needed social changes of the '60's.
Those trusting troubodores were easily 'victimized' [if they were like me, and I assumed they were ]by those clever Music Record Companies, and/or Music Production Companies that saw 'Social Change' as a money-making product to be sold. They were out only for the buck and their own profits. Those over trusting hippie musicians signed contracts that gave away all control over the music and much their lives. Also, the contracts that were signed were stacked in favor of the Record Companies, those trusting troubadores didn't spent enough or anytime 'reading the fine print'...Rights were given to the Music Production's Business men that weren't given to the 'idealistic' musician including how many songs were required by the musician to record each year, when, where they'd perform etc., the tricky Music Production Companies could get rid of a musical artist at a drop of a hat, or whenever they wanted for whatever reason. But, the musician could NOT quit the Record Company at ALL or have any rights or say about their own music...only if the business men wanted it. Musicians were 'owned'. For example: musicians had NO freedom or choises [spell?]  like what, where, when they could sing, what they could say, and to who.....  For example:  like what, where, when they could sing, what they could say, and to who..... At least two different musicians of those times.... that we know today...have said that was their own experience back then. They were 'conned' or vicimized outta their music and rights.
I think that drugs were first used to 'self-medicate', when the realization of what had happened hit home.

AND, We were ALL on drugs and stoned and just couldn't hear them, ...having way too much fun on pot and it was just too difficult to care anymore anyway. Yep...'Can you dig it?
