Pianist Eun Juu Chung With Tacoma Concert Band
Sheryl Clark just sent me this exciting info.
TACOMA CONCERT BAND TO FEATURE
GIFTED PIANIST EUN JOO CHUNG
IN A CONCERT OF EAST-WEST MUSICAL CONTRASTS
On Saturday evening, April 25th, the Tacoma Concert Band will present a concert that promises to be a unique blend of Western and Asian musical cultures. It is appropriately titled “East Meets West.” Featured soloist will be Eun Joo Chung, a young Korean-American pianist who has made quite a splash on the international concert scene, eliciting such descriptions as “a most remarkable artist” (Maestro Gerard Schwarz) and “one of the most gifted artists in her generation” (legendary pianist Bela Siki). Eun Joo Chung’s gripping interpretations of the piano literature, beautiful sound and superb musicianship have led her to major venues around the world, including Berlin, Vienna and New York’s Lincoln Center. She has won such prestigious competitions as the Viotti International Competition, Schubert International Piano Competition and the World Piano Competition. Ms. Chung will play George Gershwin’s quintessentially American masterpiece, “Rhapsody in Blue,” and “G rande Polonaise Brillante opus 22” by Fredric Chopin. The Tacoma Concert Band will counter with a variety of selections with Asian themes (Chinese, Korean, and Japanese), as well as a Gershwin medley, Holst’s “Jupiter” from “The Planets,” and of course Sousa. All in all it should be a wonderful evening of both the familiar and the exotic.
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m., at Tacoma’s historic Pantages Theater. Tickets start at only $15 and are available from the Broadway Center Box Office, 253-591-5894 or 1-800-291-7593. Substantial discounts are available for students, seniors, military personnel, and groups of 10 or more.
The award-winning Tacoma Concert Band, founded in 1981, is the Northwest’s premier community symphonic band. Comprised of many of the Puget Sound region’s finest wind and percussion musicians, the Tacoma Concert Band performs an eclectic blend of new and traditional music in an annual series of subscription concerts and its region-wide Summer Concerts in the Parks.
