Local Live Music Report for 11/29. G' Bye.. And,Thanks For All The Fish...From Jan

A new week.. music news and a change/attitute. Let's see what's happening for live music in the area...shall we?
--------------
UNCLE SAM's BAR AND GRILL in Spanaway. Of course, there's THE SHELLY ELY JAM tonight...always Sunday night's around 7 pm. Tonight, Shell has a great guest line up with my old dear friend Sheryl Clark/sax from Steve's 'ROAD DAWG' days, and there's also Laurie Johnson/vocals/harp  the fearless leader of the band, 'CARELESS HUNTER' and Gary Crooks/guitar. This will be fantastic night to show up at UNCLE SAM's folks. Wish I could make it! Hope soon. I saw this, this morning on FACEBOOK from Shelly's page. I'm guessing, there will be Shell's regulars, DYLAN LANNY ENGLAND/drums TERRY JAE/bass too tonight, but it has not been confirmed...253-507-7808....if you need more information about this band OK? There are tacos and a grill at UNCLE SAM's. So, why not get a bite to eat.
Last night, Shelly Ely hosted the 2nd Anniversity Customer Appreciation night at UNCLE SAM's. Hope it went well. Nothing's posted that I have found.
On Thursday's UNCLE SAM's regular is THE JERRY MILLER BAND.  The members of this band are Jerry Miller/guitar, Denny Foreman/guitar, Dave Erwin/bass, Jeff Wallace/keyboard/violin, Allen Heath/drums, and Russ Harris/congas/harp. It all starts at 7 pm. Call 253-507-7808 if you need more info. LAST INTERNATIONAL Blues/rock are booked for next Saturday, Dec. 4th at UNCLE SAM's.  Start time 8 pm.
-------------
Next is LIQUID SOUL COFFEE ROASTERs in McKenna, WA. That's behind BAYDOS at the McKenna 'Y'. Phone 360/400-soul. The only thing up is THE MARTIN SALINAS BAND for Saturday, December 4th at 8 pm, $5.00 cover. Members of this band are not listed. It's sad for me to see no usual OPEN MIC listed for Thursday nights at LIQUID SOUL. I will keep watching and hoping...and let everyone know right away if I see anything booked. This week, Barb and Martin sent home a scone with Steve for me...it was delicious people. Barb's a fine cook. Go there this week for a fresh roasted cup of Joe and some excellent  food too. OK?
--------------
WILLOUGHBY's RESTAURANT AND LOUNGE in Yelm. Just Karaoke posted for Willoughby's. No live music to report.
---------------
KENNY WILLIAMSON....nothing has changed on his site. No live music to report
----------------
John 'Scooch' Cugno Trio at THE GOVERNOR's GRILL in Olympia. That's 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm on Saturday nights. Live music with dinner. cool. BUT, nothing new has been posted. So please call first to confirm.
---------------
THE MANDOLIN CAFE in Tacoma. They have several nights of live music...usually Friday and Saturday nights for sure. AND, on Sunday nights it's Open Mic w/Denny Foreman & Friends. Time 6 pm to 9 pm. This is a fun relaxing place. My recomendation...get there early for parking.  AND, People, please tip well at THE MANDOLIN. There are many fine musicians who play there. They play for their love of music only....NO PAY. Please remember and support them with a big tip OR buy their CD.
-------------
Well, on to THE SUMMIT PUB in Puyallup. Tuesday night's jam night 7 pm, nothing new posted, and there's live music again on Saturday's with nothing new posted.
-------------
Oh my Goodness....Are you seeing a pattern forming here?  Well, here I go again...speaking my mind. Let's hope it doesn't get me into too much trouble. Now, this how I feel today...perhaps it will past...hope so, but, maybe not. Here we go...let's explore these ideas for a moment.
Just why am I doing this? huh? Well, yes, I was once a musician, and, I love my husband and see his awesome musical talent...of course, AND, I see all the work it takes him and his friends to be world class musicians...lots of work, lots of time..AND, usually really lousey pay. Many musicians make less than $10.00 a hour...way less, and have a couple of gigs a month, if they're lucky. Most have full-time 'Day Jobs' too...just to survive. When the economy gos down...folks stay at home more. The club owners' feel it and have to make a living too. Live music is usually one of the first things to go, jams, open mics, and karaoke take over where once musicians performed....then, as it gets worse, the clubs' start shutting down, slowly one by one by one.
All this genus, awesome musical talent...just waiting, unused, waiting to  uplift and inspire our world, making this a better place. I [Jan] have reported the music news in Western Washington since 2006, posting over 1300 news items. Hoping that BARTLETT ON BASS would help local musicians link up with lovers of music and we'd all benefit and prosper. But, We've been misunderstood, and  haven't done a very good job really. Been too polite, too timid and unassuming. Along, with my crumbing physical appearance [Jan] and Steve's innocent eagerness to please...have been seen by others as neediness and unworthiness.....Well, no more....we are now much older and wiser. It was a wonderful journey. Thank you for being a part of our jouney.
I [Jan] will continue loving live music, and continue to post when there's things to report and people who want to read about them. Steve's upcoming CD with the band he's in is exciting! But, to say...no live music to report over and over and over...is just silly, isn't it?
So...'So Long...AND Thanks for ALL the Fish' [by Douglas Adams] is my way of saying 'I Don't Know What'll Happen Next...Looks Like This Blog Is Winding Down Here...If There's Some Music To Report I Will....If Not, I Won't'. Thank you. Jan
-------------
Now, my Steve BARTLETT ON BASS, finished his parts in the in-progress CD, being created with the fine group of musicians he's in a band with. I heard some of the tunes from of the unfinished recordings...AND, loved it. When I hear more I'll let you know. Steve also has no live music to report this week. Again, thank you for supporting live music and reading all my reports and stuff. Jan

Just Listen To Those Rocks Sing...er-a-a... I mean 'Ring 'From Jan

Today, I read of a strange place near where George Washington crossed the Deleware. It's a place of mystery. Scientists don't know just why but in this place the 7 acres of rocks ...'ring'. Or, they vibrate at different frequencies when struck...giving off different tones. Go HERE
Recently, local musicians have jammed with these rocks. This was recorded and shown on The Learning Channel's Strange Science series.
There are other places on earth that rocks 'ring' too...and, scientists still haven't solved this mystery. Just thought you'd like to know that music is everywhere. That's all. Jan

'Bless This Earth, That We Live Upon...And, The Magic Of The Morning Dawn' By Steve Bartlett

What beautiful thoughts, especially this Holiday Season....'Bless This Earth, That We Live Upon...And,The Magic Of Each Morning Dawn'....these are lyrics from 'COMMON GROUND' [C] By Steve Bartlett.
Steve is friendly but, quiet with his inner feelings.
Most people don't know that Steve writes touching music. they don't know of this side of my Steve, he doesn't share it much...the touching, soft, shy, innocent, vulnerable side....the side that trusts so easily. AND, can be taken advantage of.
No, Steve never talks much of his music...BUT, I've been lucky to share my life with this beautiful being. That's what I'm grateful for today. Thank you Steve.
'Blessings to all of you....and Bless This Earth We live Upon...And, The Magic Of Each Morning Dawn'...Thanks Steve for your beautiful thoughts.. Have a Happy Thanksgiving'. Jan

What Ya Gonna Do With Those Old Vinyl Records? Roof A House?

This odd music story was found this morning at BLOGMAKEZINE.COM  HERE. Thank you. Recording artist,  Matt Glassmeyer from Nashville, Tenneessee used 350 of his old vinyl records to roof his front porch. Seems to be working great too. Now we know.
I don't think they make vinyl records anymore. Do they?..now, it's digital CDs.
That reminds me. Yesterday, my BARTLETT with long-time friend, 'XXX' were doing more recording on this fantastic band's  'no name yet' CD. They're doing the second step in creating a CD process....that's listening and making sure every part that's been recorded is just right and every member is happy with their own part and then repairing any goofs etc. that they find. [over-dubbing]...this is the instramental parts as the vocals are fixed or added in the 3rd step in making a CD.
Later, on the ride home they stopped at LIQUID SOUL COFFEE ROASTER for a coffee, and wished Barb and Martin Salinas a great Holiday. Thanks, for sending home a delicious scone for me Barb and Martin. I loved it. Jan

'How Hard Can It Be??'..Says Jan--A German Orangutan's CD's A Hit.

Well, look at this music news...will ya? A German 'Monkey'...parden me...'Orangutan', made a whistling CD and it's a big hit in Germany! He's very clever and talented said the zoo keeper, Bernd Kowalsky. “Ujian has developed his own multiple-tone whistling technique,” said Kowalsky. And, perhaps he picked it up from the zoo's cleaning crew or those noisey monkeys, that are caged nearby.
'Ujian' has quite a groupie following, but seems unimpressed with the human recognition. He appears to want to only impress the female Orangutans that live with him. Click HERE for a short You-tube video of Ujian's whistling. For the full story please go to THELOCAL, where I found this story, thank you....HERE   Jan

Storms. Earthquakes And Music...From Jan

This has been an interesting week. First Monday, a gigantic storm here. Wind, Rain and Lightening! Tree branches down everywhere. Electricity out some places. We were fine. But, our world blowing around us. Very powerful that's what Nature is.
Next, Tuesday...an Earthquake. What? Yes, Magnitude 4.2, click HERE and close too, we did not 'feel' it. But, Barry did, down the street about 2 miles. Steve has worked with Barry, and helps him now too.
For music, a member of this great band that Steve plays with, was busy this week, so no rehearsals and next week's the Holidays. They will continue on their CD after Thanksgiving. Yay! It's gonna be G-O-O-D. No CD name yet.
Yesterday, Steve had a Latte' [cool Steve] at LIQUID SOUL COFFEE ROASTERS in McKenna. Oh yea....Tonight...well, each Thursday night at 6 pm there's AN OPEN MIC at LIQUID SOUL. A great place to meet with your friends and play. AND yesterday, Martin Salinas reminded Steve about LIQUID SOUL's OPEN ELECTRIC JAM this Saturday @ 8 pm. My Steve wants to go and jam. You know folks, I hope he gos ...he deserves it. He takes care of everything around here...cooking, cleaning, animals, laundry, garden, cars, me, etc., etc. He loves music and needs to unwind. I love him. Music makes him happy. So, bring your axe, have a beer, wine or sandwich and jam with my Steve this Saturday at LIQUID SOUL COFFEE ROASTERS. That's behind BAYDOS at the McKenna 'Y'. Phone 360/400-soul. Steve doesn't know who else will be there, it's a jam. But, Martin said there's NO COVER. Cool. Go play with Steve, he'll be there after 8 pm., fun, check it out, he hopes to play with Martin and lots of you guys.. thanks,friends. Jan

Lots of FUN Last Saturday Night...Jan interviews Steve

First reported in my Local Live Music Report for Nov. 15th.... HERE...Jan
----------------
My STEVE BARTLETT was too busy this week to check out new places to hear some great live music in the area. It's getting kinda nippy outside...he had to chop and collect some firewood and gather mulch for our garden for next year. For unwanted wood pickup Email HERE. Rehearsal was on Wednesday with this wonderful band. He had a great time rehearsing with the guys. Cool. The LIQUID SOUL /WALTER's BIRTHDAY Gig last night [Nov. 13th] was fantastic...a good crowd reported Steve. Lot's of old friends and new friends too...and the room was full, Barb and Martin happy/smiling. Some of the great folks that came down that Steve happened to mentioned to me were...Carol and Kenny, Jesse and Linda, Rob, Don, Tambo, Jeff, James, Gerie, Paul [Eddie and Hazel had to leave early...see you next time guys.] Steve said there were so many folks there, that he didn't have time to speak to them all during the two breaks. Cool. Wish I could have been there too. Soon people...Thank you all for coming out and supporting live music. Martin and the members of the band are talking another gig... soon. Let you know when I hear more. OK? Jan

Jan Thanks WALTER's BIRTHDAY

First posted on BARTLETT ON BASS'PAGES under 'A BIG Thank You For WALTER's BIRTHDAY...From Jan'
-------------------
You know, sometimes we all need friends. AND, last Sunday, November 14th, it was my turn to ask for help.

I do not walk much, or use my arms...recovering from M.S. So, all day, everyday, I sit at the computer and create stuff...it's my life and art. Keep my brain active, it's what my teacher told me to do. And, I love that I can do this. Sometimes I get a little too excited about posting for other people's tastes. Whoops. I understand. I'm still learning.
Last Saturday night, our van JUST made it home from Steve's gig....the battery we thought. On Sunday, Steve headed out in the van to see his family. [I have trouble getting in the van, and stayed home]. He had changed the battery and thought all was well. BUT, by Tenino, [15 miles] our van was having problems and Steve called me...he's turning around, coming back to Yelm and going to NAPA auto store. Said, he'd call me. He's good about calling too.
Well, about 2 1/2 hours later I noticed...NO STEVE...No call either. It was now dark...where was he? It's Sunday...the auto parts store could be closed.
I called long-time friend, JON BARONI/keys/vocals/ WALTER's BIRTHDAY. Not home. Then, I called TOD LEMKUHL/guitar/vocals/WALTER's BIRTHDAY...he was kind and reassured me that Steve would be home soon. I waited awhile and tried not to worry.... before calling SCOTT ERCOLIANI/drums/WALTER's BIRTHDAY, I re-called JON and JULIE BARONI. Jon answered. He too thought Steve could be stuck between Tenino and Yelm. AND, Jon instantly dropped what he was doing, jumped into his truck and went to Tenino, ready to help my Steve. Julie called me and told me everything would be alright. OK...Now, you know, Jon and Julie Baroni are treasures. They are caring and kind folks too....THANK YOU so much, you guys.
Well, Steve called alittle later, was under our van with a flashlight in his teeth...changing the alternater in the auto store parking lot..WOW! What a guy. It took him over 4 hours to do the job. He thought he had said he'd call when it was done.
Just thought everyone would like to know...these guys from the band WALTER's BIRTHDAY ARE great, not just music-wize. Jan

Rehearsal Tonight.....Again! What Jan Thinks

One smart thing that I love about being married to a world class musician....REHEARSALS!!
Yep, 'can you rehearse more?.....P-L-E-A-S-E!'   'You're not done already, are you?' 'Don't stop now.' 'Can you please turn up?....I can hardly hear you.'
I love it...I'm one of the luckiest people in the world. Beautiful music all the time.
It takes lots of rehearsals to be great....and my Steve is great. Musician's families know the dedication and amount of time needed each day by their musician. It flows and looks easy on stage....but, lots of time has been put in to make it look and be that way....and then, we ALL get to enjoy ourselves at each performance. I'm for every rehearsal.
Tonight, BARTLETT gets together with the other band members for another rehearsal. I don't mind a bit...that's when he's happiest...playing music. I love him happy.
This week end there's a big gig and I know everything will be just perfect. That's the news for today. Thanks for letting me share. Jan

---------
JOHN 'SCOOCH' CUGNO in his 'JOHN 'SCOOCH' CUGNO TRIO' played yesterday, Saturday, November 6th, at a new venue... THE GOVERNOR's GRILL in Olympia. If you like blues, this maybe your ticket. NOTE from Scooch.."Music goes from 6:30-9:30. Great affordable food. This is a "supper club" experience right here in Olympia."
-----------
I'm sure THE SHELLY ELY JAM went well last Sunday. Shell and her guys host a fun jam each Sunday night at UNCLE SAM's BAR AND GRILL in Spanaway on Pacific. About 7 pm be at UNCLE SAM's, the jam goes til about 10 pm. Shelly has many top musicians in the area play with her each Sunday. It's alway fantastic. 'Great tacos' too, reports JEFF AND KATHY WALLACE. Have a bite to eat before or during the music. AND, bring your axe.

---------
WILLOUGHBY's RESTAURANT AND LOUNGE in Yelm have nothing reported for this week.

Now for, LIQUID SOUL COFFEE ROASTER's in McKenna. Steve said the Thursday night OPEN MIC looked like it was booming last Thursday. A full parking lot and lots of folks keeps these wonderful venues alive people. Yay! All levels of musicians are welcome each Thursday 6 pm at LIQUID SOUL.
THE MARTIN SALINAS BAND played at LIQUID SOUL last night...hope it went fine. Have not seen a word on FACEBOOK, newspaper or anywhere. Will post when I've found any info. I do not know the members of this band yet.
***Next Saturday, November 13th, at 8 pm please be at LIQUID SOUL COFFEE ROASTER's to hear the band my hubby's been recording with all week. This will be awesome! Alice Dancing Under The Gallows

How's It Going In The Recording Studio?...... Report From Jan

We [Steve and Jan] were enjoying our coffee this morning. Jan asked quietly, calmly.... 'How's it going with the recording Steve? Huh?'
This is what he said....."WOW! These musicians are stepping up to the plate AND DOING it. 'XXXX', who in my opinion [Steve's opinion], had the tuffest job on this CD is just shining. Tonight, [Thursday] we will be recording 'VVVVV' and probably 'AAA', I really trust 'MMMMM' musical judgement...he's doing a fantastic job. 'PPP' was sincere when he said I did a fine job with those basslines on the tunes we recorded the other night. At rehearsal last night, I thought we became bonded as a team, I'm looking forward to recording tonight. Oh, by the way, 'GGGG' said 'Hi'."
Now, there you have it from my Steve BARTLETT ON BASS. Jan.

Hi Scott...Just a note to thank you for your phone [Saturday night] call last night AND your recent Emails too. I appreciate your input and observations and truly agree with you about many things you brought up. Last night, I was in bed already, Steve got your message and let me know you'd called. I heard your message this morning too. Even though, I think phone calls about important issues are best...my physical condition at this time makes it much easier for me to Email people. I Thank you for being understanding about this.
Thanks for pointing out some important issues that were affecting the WHOLE band. You, Scott, were very brave and thoughtful to speak your truth. I respect that very much. I now see clearly that the other members of the band, may have found it difficult to speak directly to me with Steve playing in 'WALTER's BIRTHDAY. But, Steve is only 1/4th of the band. and while I was doing what he wanted [posters, logo ideas etc.]... I respect ALL of your rights and feelings, and just assumed all were all in agreement with him. I will be sure from now on that the band has come to an agreement before I take any action. It would be helpful to me if WALTER's BIRTHDAY, let me know who will be their spokesperson..... I WILL post the news of BARTLETT ON BASS...Steve Bartlett on Bartlett On Bass and Night Rose and elsewhere stating that it is MY--JA ROSE opinion only.
After some thought, I have decided to place a disclaimer on Bartlett On Bass today...that all postings are my personal opinions and observations alone. NOT any bands or musicians that my husband may be playing with. 'BARTLETT ON BASS' and 'NIGHT ROSE' are divisions of 'ONYXX' [R], a registered trademark, # 602-189-450, licensed in Washington State for our ['STEVE C. BARTLETT and JA ROSE-BARTLETT] music business.
Please feel free to contact me anytime.... voicing your views, opinions or to just chat. I love you all, love music and respect all of your ideas and talents.
Scott, I will send everyone...TOD, JON this note, apologizing for any hurtful feelings I may have caused to any of you...Peace And Love, Jan

What's BARTLETT ON BASS Up To? What Secrets Does Jan Know?

Steve was talking to me over coffee this morning. He said that
"he's having a really good time rehearsing and recording with the band he's playing with.
This week,,,there's a rehearsal on Wednesday evening...and then more recording on Thursday and Friday nights. After that, hopefully they'll be pretty close to finishing the CD." Steve said "there's no title to the CD yet". When I asked him.
[Jan's Opinion]....I'm getting really excited about Steve's next gig on the 13th of this month. It'll be fantastic! I know Steve will love it too. He's always happiest when he's playing music. I just love to see him smile. I promise...just as soon as I  feel like I can tell you more I will. OK? Jan

'ALMOST. MAINE' In Tacoma...JESSICA BLINN NEWS

Received an Email from our friend JESSICA BLINN this morning, telling me this news.....
"Dear Friends,

Almost, Maine, Gold from Straw Theatre Company’s second production, opens this Thursday at the Broadway Center in Tacoma. Gold from Straw Theatre received fantastic reviews for their first show, Doubt, that ran last spring. And I am confident that Almost, Maine will have the same level of wonderful story telling and acting.
Of course many of you know that Gold from Straw Theatre’s artistic director is my husband, Aaron Schmookler. Having a theatre company that puts on high quality, professional productions that Surprise, Delight and Inspire its audiences has been my husband’s dream since I first met him. And I am so delighted and grateful that that dream is happening. Every day I see an incredible amount of heart, work and inspiration being poured into the company. So if you love high caliber theatre, seeing our local community being enhanced by great art, and seeing dreams happen, come on out and see Almost, Maine.
Warmly,
Jessica

Scott Ercoliani October 22 at 12:22pm Report

Hi Jan. Thank you for all your activity and posting Walters band gigs, etc. I think this kind of thing can be over done though sometimes where people may start to get slightly annoyed about the frequency. I think we need to be selective and gentle about how and when we post. My request is that you let people know just once. Just one time. Then maybe post a reminder once (just once) the night before the gig. Too much is not good. We want to have a subtle approach to this. People do not enjoy constant reminders. Please go forth with freedom and joy - you are a precious gem - and please back off on the amount of posts for Walter's.Thank you. Scott
