O.K....ELLA FITZGERALD and HERE was also known as 'The Fist Lady of JAZZ'. She was a jazz vocalist, did some acting too, and her birthday was on April 25th, 1917. I read about her in eNEWS JAZZ. But, she's not difficult to find online or anywhere...her music's everywhere. Really. With over 70 albums to her name and over 40 million copies sold, you can't miss her.
When she was a child, Ella loved to dance, She started singing in her church at a young age. But, in her teen years, her mom died and she ended up in an orphanage. Then, Ella ran away and was homeless.
Her luck changed in November '34 when she was about age 17, she won a $25.00 top prize at
THE APOLLO THEATER in Harlem on 'Amateur Night'. This is what happened, always loving dance Ella went to the 'Amateur Night' that night planning to dance, but was intimidated by the dance duo that was there with her and changed her mind at the very last second and sang two of her favorite tunes....The Boswell Sister's 'Judy' and 'The Object Of My Affection' AND, the rest is history.
Ella Fitzgerald won...well, some places say 13, other places say 14
GRAMMY AWARDS during her singing career. It was alot either way...Go Ella.
She won
THE KENNEDY CENTER for the PERFORMING ARTS METAL OF HONOR,
THE PRESIDENTIAL METAL of FREEDOM,
HARVARD UNIVERSITY gave her an HONOR DOCTORATE of MUSIC and
GEORGE AND IRA GERSHWIN AWARD...for Lifetime Achievement...there's even more too, but my finger's running out of steam for now. Have to rest for awhile. BUT,...Believe me when I just say...'She's won alota awards.' .... See.
WIKIPEDIA and check it all out.
Steve thought I should say something about her death, because Ella's so wise and brave.. Ella died in 1996. She had both legs amputated at the knees three years eariler from diabetes, she was in a wheelchair..and,.loved to spend her days out in her garden, listening to the birds, smelling the air, feeling the wind on her face and hearing her grand daughter Alice laugh. On her final day, she was wheeled back inside after 'bout an hour outside.....and from WIKIPEDIA " she looked up with a soft smile on her face and said, "I'm ready to go now." She died in her home on June 15, 1996 at the age of 79.
