Did Ya Know?..Who Was Donald Duck Dunn?

by sylvar cc
DONALD DUCK DUNN/bass was a member of the great band, 'BOOKER T AND THE MGs' entered into the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME,while in that group. He died this past year in May at the age of 70 HERE.
An awesome bassman, he played with Wilson Pickett, Jerry Lee Lewis, Otis Redding, Neil Young,  Eric Clapman, he was a member of THE BLUES BROTHERS BAND....cool.
'Duck' as he was called by family and close friends began playing the bass at age 16, he tried the guitar first, but later said it had two too many strings on it...sounds just like a born bassman says I.... [smile, Jan].

For a two minute history of this bassman, watch this video, I found on YOUTUBE

'Rescue Me'

by brittreints cc
Just read online that that cool R & B singer FONTELLA BASS died at age 72. in St Louie. Her song 'Rescue Me' was a big hit way back in 1965. She had other favorite duet tunes around that same time with BOBBY McCLURE, including 'Don't Mess Upo A Good Thing' and 'You're Gonna Miss Me'.
She married jazz composer/trumpeter LESTER BOWIE in the '60s , and they traveled through Europe before settling in the U,S.A.
BASS in her 'les Stances of Sophie' and 'Theme of Yoko' were  her boundary-bursting jazz contributions to music...Go HERE

Old Hippies Unite...'We Can Change The World'...Yes, We Can

by positivity toolbox
This song says it all, doesn't it? Gets my feet moving too. Wanna Dance. Guess I'm a dreamer...hippies of the '60's all seemed to share a dream of  a world of freedom and equality for ALL.
Today, I also remember JOHN LENNON...a great dreamer and one of my heros. John died on this day in 1980. Found this image on FACEBOOK at PositivityToolbox

Look At This VW BUS, Will Ya?...Way.Cool

by jeppe2 CC
">I got my first VW  Camper Bus in the '60's...WOW! I just loved it. It had everything---bed, table, closet, sink, moon roof,  storage, was a bright orange color with a peace sign on the side door etc...So, Ernie, my first hubby, and I went to Mexico in it...and, it was our home, we lived in it all over Mexico and the lower States while we traveled. I've had several VW Vans over the years and loved them all. They're great on gas too. Steve and I even have a '66 VW van today that doesn't run but has everything in it...and can be really cool when fixed up.
BUT, wait look what VW's come up with.... a new SUPER VW Bus...just look at this will ya?

David Bowie's Gonna Be 65 This January...Amazing

by david_shankbone cc
On January 8th, my 'starman' turns 65. I've always been awed by this guy...what an out-of-the-box showman. Always entertaining to me. Steve will check him out, and then will give his opinion. 'He's entertaining and authenic.' says Steve
I think for me, David Bowie's an unique whole package...I love the visual effects to his music...the color, the mystery...I'm not sure, what I'll see when I see him.
'What's next?...I wonder... Maybe, it's the artist in me. He has lots charisma, that's for sure....'Happy Birthday, David'. That's all. Jan
----------------
I found this video of David Bowie and Mick Jagger dancing...fun to watch. It was posted on YOUTUBE by EMI.
This was first posted last January...1/14/2011...and, I love this guy...so, I posted  some more today.  David will be 65 this January 2012.  Thanks, Jan

Music, Music Everywhere...AND Just a Note I'll Share

Steve Bartlett, Janet Rose 1997?
'Doe-Ray-Me-Fah-Lah-Tea-Doe...Lah-Lah-Lah'...AND, I'm just warming up...Did you know that I, yes, that's Jan, NOT Steve was a real live musician once? Well, I was, AND, I did vocals and percussion in a band with Steve, where he was one of the guitarists and the awesome bassman...WOW. I was in love...just look at that BIG, beautiful smile of Steves'...and, that amazing bass, will ya? How could I lose? That was way back in 2004 or so. I don't have many photos of that time, BUT have seen some of us performing on stage...so, they're out there. The band was known by several names, as I recall...including THE JANET ROSE BAND, and KNIGHTS OF THE MIDNIGHT SKY. We performed at some weddings, at several fairs, the Olympia Farmer's market, and, the Capital building in downtown Olympia etc. too. Members of the band were... author, story teller and entertainer BRUCE A. SMITH/guitar/vocals/song writer, author BRUCE HANEY/harp, Steve BARTLETT ON BASS, and me...JANET ROSE/percussion/vocals. It was lots of fun, but, I was always uncomfortable on stage. BUT, wanted to stay close to that BASSMAN. So, it worked out well for me. Until, one day, at a gig the guitarist, Bruce had to reach over and finish my drum part...my arms just could not do it anymore....sadness and tears. But, like every other musician I know, I can't get very far from music in my life...I've always loved it, and always will. Thank you music, I love you...AND, you too Steve. Jan

Man, Boy And One BIG Elephant...Smile.

Meeting MIKE KARNES At Rhythm Fire School Of Music

Steve Bartlett relaxing in Olympia
Today, Sunday, November 18th... BARTLETT's meeting his buddy MIKE KARNES/guitar in Olympia at THE RHYTHM FIRE SCHOOL OF MUSIC, for a rehearsal. What fun these old friends have getting together every week or so. My Steve's enjoying his rehearsing this morning and excited 'bout getting over there to see Mike. AND, I'm so lucky to get to listen to all that great rehearsing too.
Other recent news is that BARTLETT's singer/song writer brother RUSSELL BARTLETT/guitar/vocals called him last night. He's been very busy moving back up to Washington State to be closer to family. from Texas. BARTLETT ON BASS or my Steve will call his brother tonight. Hopefully they will be doing some major music projects together...cool. Perhaps creating a CD, or going even on a fun music tour for a few days. We'll know more tonight....Yea! I'll tell as soon as I can...O.K? Maybe, getting together with Country Americana recording artist MICHAEL O'NEILL/guitar/vocals for some great music.
AND, even though it's Thanksgiving week, music never takes a vacation for my hubby...he just loves it. So, this upcoming Tuesday evening. November 20th...he's looking forward to seeing most of those WALTER's BIRTHDAY friends of his..that's TOD LEMKUHL/guitar/vocals and SCOTT ERCOLIANI/drums , for some jamming out at Tod's DREAM ACRES in McKenna.
He saw JEFF MORGAN, the bass Jedi last week in Tacoma. Steve really admires Jeff's playing. And, is honored to be with him each week.
Oh yea...Steve went to UNCLE SAM''s BAR AND GRILL last Thursday evening in Spanaway. That's JERRY MILLER BAND night at Uncle Sam's. ...Go see Jerry Miller at UNCLE SAM's on Thursdays, 16003 Pacific in Spanaway...O.K? Also, DAVE BRAY/guitar/vocals was birthday celebrating at Uncle Sam's last Thursday. Steve enjoyed seeing him and Steve got to jam with Jerry Miller and Dave Bray...what fun.
Thanks for reading my local music news, featuring my awesome guy BARTLETT ON BASS. Bye, Jan

What's The News? 'Dream Acre's The Place To Be...'

Bartlett at Liquid Soul Coffee Roasters
Tonight, Thursday, Nov. 8th, my Steve's getting together with TOD LEMKUHL/guitar/vocals and SCOTT ERCOLIANI/drums for some music fun at Tod's place called 'Dream Acres' in McKenna. Tod and Scott are members of that very cool band called WALTER's BIRTHDAY, along with BARTLETT ON BASS and JON BARONI/keys/harp/vocals. Steve called Jon too for tonight's music, but No-Go. Jon must be outta town, or something. Hopefully, we'll hear something from him soon. Miss you Jon.
But, the guys just couldn't wait... music with friends causes a bad case of 'itchy fingers', for my BARTLETT and lotsa musicians that I know. They just can't help themselves. So, tonight's the night at 'Dream Acres'....cool.
Also, some new cool news from singer/song writer AND, Steve's famous  brother RUSSELL BARTLETT/guitar/vocals. Go HERE for his site too.  We just heard that Russ is back up in Stanwood, WA.  and, think's very highly of Americana Country Artist...MICHAEL O'NEILL, who BARTLETT ON BASS played with a few week's ago at THE HARMON BREWERY/TAP ROOM in Tacoma. So, I'd love to see them ALL get together for some fantastic music real soon. Let's see that happening...O.K. folks...Yeah!
Now, Steve's still getting together alot with his old-time friend and music instructor, MIKE KARNES at MUSIC 6000 in Olympia for rehearsals. They sure enjoy getting together with each other. And, I love it too 'cause I get to hear Steve rehearsing at home...Please Steve rehearse some more, so I can listen...O.K?
I'm trying to think of all the music stuff happening for us this past week or so...I've been so excited about all my kids moving to this area this past week, that I hope I haven't missed anything...ah, let's see....Oh..now I remember. BARTLETT ON BASS has been getting together with JEFF MORGAN/the bass jedi in Tacoma these past few weeks....what a bass master Jeff is....Steve loves JEFF MORGAN's bass.
And, folks if you're in the Yelm area..Remember, BARTLETT is always available for your own personal bass instruction at JOYFUL NOISE MUSIC COMPANY in Yelm. Join his happy students at Joyful Noise Music Company by calling Allen at.....360/458-6674.
We have not heard anymore from STEPHEN K. HICKS/drums, owner of HOBBY STREET STUDIOS about the return of MARTIN SALINAS/guitar/vocals to the Yelm area for a visit.
Thanks for reading my music news. Jan

Have A Great Halloween...And, WEREWOLVES OF LONDON

'Happy Halloween'.When I think of Halloween....I think of WARREN ZEVON's hit song, WEREWOLVES OF LONDON...you?
Well, of course you do...What a silly question..pardon me..WEREWOLVES OF LONDON just means Halloween for all of us, that's all.
So, I looked up WARREN ZEVON to find out more...It being Halloween today and all, and here's what I found...
Warren Zevon was born in 1947 and died in 2003...Bummer, I'd love to hear more of his songs right now.
His songs were always full of my kind of humor and satire...they always gave me a big smile, and, I could listen to them over and over again. never tiring of them.
My Steve performed WEREWOLVES OF LONDON, by ZEVON, way back in 2005 while he was  in AL EARICK's BAND. I remember, he was at  GOLDEN WEST in Tacoma 'bout this time of the year. Members of that band were AL EARICK/guitar/vocals, SHERYL CLARK/sax, KEVIN CHRISTENSEN was drums at that time, even though DON BENSON was on drums too while BARTLETT was in the band. AND, the vocalist for 'werewolves' was a fine guitarist/harpman named 'SKY'. Forgive me 'Sky' for not remembering your full name. but, you did a fine job. [Jan...Smile and Wave]. NOTE: JON BARONI/keys/harp/vocal was also in this band for a short while.

Remember, 'You're An Original, Cannot Be Replaced'

Jan Rose and Steve Bartlett. Photo by Crystal Sincoff.cc
I just listened again to KATY PERRY's song...'FIREWORK'. Sung by KATY PERRY and an very talented JODI DiPIAZZA . The song was so touching...it moved me to tears.
Please watch the video I posted it below. I found it on YOUTUBE, it's a duet sung by Katy Perry and young Jodi DiPiazza. Jodi was diagnosed as autistic at the age of two, with not much hope given to both of her parents, that she'd ever talk or even understand...but, she has surprised everyone.... Never give up on yourself, says I. [Jan]
I remember these lyrics in Katy Perry's song, 'FIREWORK'...'You don't have to feel like a wasted space, You're an original, cannot be replaced'
This reminded me when I was also given NO hope in 1999, I was diagnosed with M.S., and it  was recommended by my doctors to have a spinal fusion...AND, something went very. very wrong, during surgery leaving me a paraplegic, unable to walk or move my left side. All the doctors would say was...' 'Whoops... and, put me in a nursing home.' They said later, when I walked into their office, 'I was a wonder'...'they did not think I'd ever move my arms and legs again'.
But wait...., here come's the best part, the very handsome HERO of this story...none other than our awesome leader of BARTLETT ON BASS....Steve BARTLETT ON BASS, himself, yeah!...and, I was saved from the dreaded nursing home by BARTLETT ON BASS.
I talked everyone at the hospital, into letting me go to rehab instead of a nursing home, and giving me at least a chance to learn to walk again. Steve came everyday, and helped me walk...and, we were NOT married at the time, and, he did NOT have to....he just did it out of the kindness of his heart....'WOW..What a special guy', says I...'O.K.,...I'll marry you.'...and, the rest is history.
Enjoy this amazing and touching video. Thanks, Jan

'Beauty For Ashes' CD By Brother Russ Bartlett, Now Available

BEAUTY FOR ASHES CD
Just read the news, RUSSELL BARTLETT, our Austin-based singer/song writer brother has an awesome new CD out. It's just been released this month...BEAUTY FOR ASHES' is now available on CDBaby. I just took a listen and really enjoyed all 10 new songs. Go HERE to listen for yourself. O.K? See if you agree with me.
Russ just finished a cool west coast tour in August with COLIN GILMORE, that was very rewarding for them both.
AND, Seattle based fans were treated to TWO area gigs...one in Seattle, at the CONOR BYNE PUB and one up north at the Bartlett family's hometown of Stanwood......at THE STANWOOD CAMANO FAIRGROUNDS.
Russell left the Seattle area in 1992 for Texas, and Texas has never been the same. BARTLETT's voice, humor and  country-Americana musical style just fit Texas perfectly. Listen to all five of his CD's on CDBaby and you will be delighted. Enjoy.
 Thanks, T. Jan

NOTES from the past week....Last Saturday, Oct. 20th, that singer/song writer from WALTER's BIRTHDAY, recording artist TOD LEMKUHL had a music bash at his home near McKenna at DREAM ACRES. Know it was wonderful, Steve was so disappointed he missed this get-together. but, our car was out of order and had to be fixed on Saturday, and BARTLETT didn't get home last Friday night from THE STONEGATE gig until 3 am...WOW. He was just too bushed.
Last but not least, there was Steve's weekly get-together at MUSIC 6000 in Olympia, with old friend, MIKE KARNES, who teaches guitar/bass in the Silverdale area. They had a great time reported Steve... always adding tunes to their growing set lists...this will be a awesome group when they're ready to perform in the area.
My Steve ran into drummer, STEPHEN HICKS, owner of HOBBY STREET STUDIOS this week. Hicks said 'MARTIN SALINAS/guitar/vocals, former owner of LIQUID SOUL COFFEE ROASTERs in McKenna, will be back in this area in a couple of weeks, comeing up from San Diego, California'...I'll keep everyone posted as new information surfaces. Perhaps, there will be some music at STEPHEN HICK's studio HOBBY STREET when Salinas is here...Hope so.
Also, I got an Email from drummer KENNY WILLIAMSON this past week, all seems to be going well with him. Thanks for reading my music news. T. Jan

Real Live Music Troubadour Of The '60's With BARTLETT ON BASS

P hoto by Radio Saigón cc
Now, here's the latest music news......Steve's doing music just everywhere, and is happier than a clam at high tide. So, cool to see him smile...you know, THAT smile...the one that's genuine and real from ear to ear. I love to see him really happy, that's all.
So, what's going on...he loves the people he's playing with. That's one thing...JERRY MILLER for one...he's a music troubadour and music legend. JERRY MILLER played in the band MOBY GRAPE and other groups way back in the '60's in San Francisco. Not only is Jerry's playing amazing and beautiful.... Jerry's been around and knows some of the really fine musicians, some true heros or music troubadours of this age. The ones that changed our history with their then [1960's] new ideas about social justice, freedom and equality. Steve and my hats are off to theses courageous men and women, the musicians of the '60's...and that means JERRY MILLER.
You can hear a real music troubadour and music hero JERRY MILLER every Friday night at THE STONEGATE in Tacoma, WA. That's at 5421 South Tacoma Way, phone 253/473-2255. With MILLER's back up by my Steve BARTLETT ON BASS and KEVIN CHRISTENSEN/drums at THE STONEGATE. What a honor that is. A fantastic night of music.
Now, that's not the only place to see or hear JERRY MILLER and his music friends, during the week. He plays also at UNCLE SAM's BAR AND GRILL on 16003 Pacific in Spanaway on Thursday nights. AND, other areas around Tacoma. Steve does not play with JERRY on Thursday....but, I'll post all BARTLETT's and JERRY's gigs here as they come in...OK?
Steve's rehearsing with Jerry and Kevin this Tuesday afternoon at Jerry's house. This Friday, Oct. 12th will be great and it all begins at 9 pm., gos 'til 1 am each Friday night. Come out for a special night of music, and hear a real music legend too....Cool.
And, Steve's playing with his music buddy, music instructor, MIKE KARNES each week. Today, Sunday, Oct. 7th, they'll get together for some fun at MUSIC 6000 in Olympia. Soon, they'll be playing in Olympia. Mike's taking care of that part of the gigs...he's got some places ready for their great sound, when Steve and Mike are ready.

The pizza is great, beer's ice cold and they serve mixed drinks too. It'll be fun. JERRY MILLER/guitar/vocals, Steve BARTLETT ON BASS, and KEVIN CHRISTENSEN/drums.
Steve's also been rehearsing with his music buddy, music instructor MIKE KARNES. They get together each Sunday and just have fun, relax and play...Steve loves it. Both of them have been just playing forever...just 'bout 50 years music experience each. They really admire each other's musical genius, and relax. It's so much fun for them both. They get together each week in Olympia.
My hubby ran into G.W. TAYLOR/vocals yesterday. I love his voice and will look on YOUTUBE for a video. G. W. is a find actor, and has been in many performances put on by talented NANCY TRIBUSH HILLMAN, at THE NEW TRIAD THEATER in Yelm, over the years. He has a wonderful CD out too. I'll check it out and find out where you can find it and post it here OK?
Steve talked to singer/song writer TOD LEMKUHL/guitarist/vocals over this past week about getting together for some music. Hopefully, that will be happening soon.
Bye for now. Jan
