How It ALL Started..'What Do You Wanna Play?'..1967

Steve told me a cool story lately....How ALL this all started way back in 1967. Steve was in high school, north of Seattle in Stanwood, Washington.

Now, he started playing guitar in 1960, when his dad, Morgan Bartlett Sr. surprised Steve in his third grade class, and sang a few songs and played his wonderful magic guitar. I know 'THE OLD MAN OF THE MOUNTAIN' was always a favorite song, and today Morgan's grand children and great grand children love it too.

Steve said ,'he was a 'nerd', and bored in school'. When he and two school friends decited to begin a band one day, to rent a hall, have a concert and make lotsa money. 'We had NO fear' says Steve....OK,...Cool.

They began by deciding who would play what instrument...Steve got to play the guitar. The two friends were also brothers, last name was 'LUDWICK' Roger and his brother. One brother got to play the drums and the other the bass.

OK...They practiced for about 'two weeks', charged at the door, had their concert. It was great fun, lotsa couples dancing AND, the boys each made 'about $7.00'. Must have been a BIG amount of money way back in 1967. That was their only performance. Steve moved back to Edmonds soon after the concert to live with his mom...known as Betty or Elisabeth Perkins-Bartlett.

Steve did not began playing the bass until 'round 1970.

Their multi-award winner album "Back to the Black Bayou" had two "nominations" at the last BMA (the Blues GRAMMIES). Yesterday, STEPHEN K. HICKS/drums and owner of HOBBY STREET STUDIOS called me on the phone and was the first one, except my Steve, to call me 'TRAJEN'...Cool. Because that's my name...'TRAJEN'... JAN ROSE-BARTLETT'.
'Trajen' is an odd name, I know, most folks know me as 'Jan', and that's cool. I go by both names. Why?, because 'TRAJEN' means 'POWERFUL', that's all...thanks for wondering and asking. AND, I AM very powerful, bold, secure and have alota courage, I never give up, that's just the way I am. I've always been that way...as long as I can remember. This word really helps me grow and change too, I fell in love with the name. So, when I heard this word 'TRAJEN' for the first time a few years ago...I just knew it was me. I legally changed my name for the first time in 2004...and loved that change...so why not do it again? thought I. When anyone calls me 'TRAJEN', it helps me remind myself that I am very powerful, always safe and can do anything. Thanks everyone for helping me remember. First, I will say...My Steve had a really awesome time yesterday performing at THE OLYMPIA CITY CENTER, with his music buddies. He reports lota cool music, happy people, and some surprise stuff too...Yep...he was smiling THAT smile, when he got home last night 'round 11 pm. [Music was from 4 pm to about 8 pm.] I'm always happy to see that smile when he gets home.
BUT, Before I forget,..I'd like to thank ALL the people that made this fantastic evening of music happen by stepping up to the plate, and making this a evening to remember for our neighbors and friends, STEPHEN K. HICKS/drums, wife ANNETTE ROTH-HICKS and their young son, and all those guests at this private show. Steve reports that ANNETTE was beaming at the end of the evening...so, proud of her hubby STEPHEN K. HICKS/drums and owner of HOBBY STREET STUDIOS. She helped organize this special event for her employer. "Everybody had a good time and it was fun". states my Steve.
Well, who was there then? you ask...The day began about 4 pm, with YASMINE ARIEL and RAMI doing several tunes. They're real magic and I've posted a video of them at the end of this report of her and her husband videoed at THE SPIRAL CAFE in Yelm last month. Check it out. OK? Beautiful.
Then, the evening continued with STEVE/bass, JON/keys/vocals, STEPHEN/drums and MIGUILITO/congas being honored by being asked to perform that same tune, 'Little Wing' by JIMI HENDRIX and two other tunes with YASMINE ARIEL and RAMI.
This night then continued with Steve BARTLETT ON BASS/vocals, JON BARONI/keys/harp/vocals, JASON HOGLE/guitar MIGULITO FIELDMAN/congas and, of course, STEPHEN K. HICKS/drums doing their stuff..... There were laughing, dancing children, at the front of the big stage, excited and jumping with the live music. [Steve just loves kids and I can count on him always telling me about their activities]. He also tells me that there were dancing couples during the evening too. Cool. Just sounds great everyone. Thanks for the report, Steve. T. Jan

Whoops...As you might have guessed, well, how do I say it more plainly than this... 'just read my stuff and there's NO guess work to it...spellin' and punctuation just AIN'T my thang!'...well, I mean, I'm just a woman who loves music and has alota time on my hands...er, I mean just one finger on one hand...AND, I really try and go over everything melodious times...WOW..just look at THAT BIG word, will ya...you can't say I'm not trying. Can ya?

BUT, sometimes, no matter how hard I try... some itty-bitty, teany-weany thing gets passed me....like STEPHEN K. HICK's name, that's our neighbor and drummer, and owner of HOBBY STREET STUDIOS, yes, THAT's STEPHEN K. HICKS real name...What?..his name? YEP...It's not STEVE HICKS, like I've been spelling it just EVERYWHERE. And, he's been so polite, cool and kind I might add...he N-E-V-E-R made a peep..... not one word.

I just found this out 'bout two days ago on FACEBOOK that I'd made this horrible mistake, when I saw how HE spelled it...and noticed it WASN'T the way I've been spelling it. I just knew HE was right, not me...and, I started changing the spelling of his name everywhere I could find it as fast as I could...did you notice? Well, I was just hoping that if I did it fast enough, he.... STEPHEN K. HICKS/drums and owner of HOBBY STREET STUDIOS in Yelm would never notice. Forgive me STEPHEN K. When musicians are stressed, they play music. When musicians are sad, they play music., when they are happy, they play music. When musicians are celebrating, they play music. When musicians are worried, they play music. When musicians are lonely, they...you got it, play music. 'Cause they love music, become the music, are the music. It's how they love, live and communicate in their world. The music must go on...and on, and on. They ARE the music.
So, last night, my hubby, Steve went to a rehearsal at neighbor, STEPHEN K. HICK's/drums at his HOBBY STREET STUDIOS in Yelm, they played 'til 'round 1 am...when Steve came in the door just smiling that beautiful smile from ear to ear...yep...he had a great time, magic happened! 'Cool...tell me all about it, Sweetheart'. I just love this part....he slows way down, thinks a minute, smiles and then gos over the whole night with me. Guess, we got to bed 'round 3 am after sharing milk and cookies. 'Ah... A perfect night.'
Yes, musicians just love music, that's all. AND, They love to get together and play with their music buddies, that's just the way it is ladies and gents.
That's why, it's so very strange for me to hear some family members of these fine musicians say...'Oh, Are they gonna rehease that AGAIN?', or 'That's what I get for marrying a XXXX, all he does is play'. ..WHAT? Many wives or husbands of musicians seem to never get to a gig. Some are even hostile and pressure the musician to stop playing...'it's either me or the music.' Have you ever heard of Doctors, Lawyers or Nurses etc. having to deffend their passion and their trade? It's not party time, it's lotsa hard work and takes a real talent too. It's 'spose to look easy and fun. Then everyone will enjoy themselves.[I've always noticed that when musicians are having any kinda problem on stage...so, does the audience, and they leave.]
So, wait a minute right there...this is AMAZING musician family member, do you realize that you're so very lucky to get to listen to 'Spain' by Chick Corea or whatever for FREE and so many times too. Just look at all the time it takes to get these tunes just right...how do these guys and gals do it? They have trained themselves to hear a pin drop...I'm always awed at that. Good job guys.
Last night, the guys were rehearsing for THE OLYMPIA CITY CENTER gig next Monday night. They'll have a fun time, I just know it. They'll be playing in JASON HOGLE's band, ARTISIAN UNDERGROUND...he'll be playing guitar. My Steve BARTLETT ON BASS, JON BARONI/keys/harp/vocals and STEPHEN K. HICKS/drums, st_robert will be the sound engineer. Sunday they'll have another rehearsal and all love it all over again too. The music always gos on.

You know, we're just plain lucky to have soooo many awesome musicians in this area. Why, let me tell ya 'bout another favorite of mine....It's KIM ARCHER. She's wonderful...and I've noticed her band THE KIM ARCHER BAND, of course, playing all over the place, from Seattle down to more my neck of the woods ,..Olympia. Cool.
I was all lined up to see her live at THE URBAN ONION in Olympia awhile back, when I was getting around more, when my Steve went an got a gig for that night in another part of town, I had no ride and don't drive anymore, since the time I asked my foot to put on the brakes, and it just sat there and calmly asked me when....AND, so I missed seeing KIM ARCHER that night....BUMMER.

MEREL HAGGARD On The Repair In Macon, Georgia Hospital.. But, Just Wants To Go Home

Guess it just shows ya....'When it Rains it Pours'...Yep. Poor Country singing star MEREL HAGGARD 74, has lotsa unexpected health problems to deal with. First, he was admitted to a hospital and treated for double pneumonia in Macon,Georgia. But wait, that's not all......they then discovered "three stomach ulcers, eight polyps in his colon and diverticulitis in his esophagus" says Ann Oldenburg of USA Today, go HERE..... WOW! That's a lotta stuff.
But, Haggard just wants go home and climb on his personal bus and return to Redding, California. 'Cause that's home to HAGGARD. And, I understand completely as I always just wanna be home when things are going rough too...don't you?
Well, sounds like a good idea MEREL....but, it's harder than it sounds he found out. HAGGARD decited to returned to the hospital for more treatment and rest, after trying to leave. Just too much for him now. Good luck MEREL HAGGARD. T. Jan.

OK...I'm Ready...What's Going On Now?

Steve's been really busy cleaning up our little farm after that COLD ice-snow storm that hit this area last week. Yelm got their lights turned on just yesterday. Several of our neighbors are still nowhere to be seen.....we bet at relatives with lights, lotsa food, water and heat...Their cars are not around....it's so strange...very, very eerie...And quiet.

I'm sure we're gonna stock up more candles, have a small camp stove on hand with fuel, more easy to prepare foods, and lotsa drinking water and ALL the first aid stuff we can get ahold of. We learned alot.

My Steve did not make it to a jam arranged for last Friday night at our neighbor Stephen K Hicks /drums's, HOBBY STREET STUDIO just down the street...we had three trees blocking our driveway AND hard ICE-ROCKS falling from heaven....well, I guess, more like shooting down from heaven on us...SCARY.

He will be going to STEPHEN HICKS/drums this Thursday evening instead. JON BARONI/keys/harp/vocals called today and my Steve will see him there too. It'll be lotsa fun. A friend of Stephen Hicks, named JASON HOGLE/guitar, from Olympia, is planning to be there. That's how musicians relax....they just love to get together and play. Everyone around here have been so busy with fixing stuff after that terrible storm....so, they look forward to relaxing together and playing...AND, I always support that. It always makes me so happy to see Steve smile...that GREAT BIG REAL SMILE, when he's playing music with his buddies.

I'm sure some cool gigs will be coming down the pike soon and I'll let you ALL know right away. OK? T. Jan

But wait...CYNDI LAUPER? Yes...A BIG YES. CYNDI LAUPER now means that bold powerful, heart-felt, crying kinda BLUZZZ. Yea Cyndi. I just loved it. I'll post it below.

Is That SEAL.... Just CRAZY or What?...Heard He's Leaving Heidi And The Kids

I really like SEAL's music...always have, very beautiful, lovely, inspirational and meaningful tunes. I play them over, over and over etc., you know what I mean. They've changed my life.
Well, I'm reading today online that he and his wife...Heidi Klum, are splitting up 'cause he's 'round 50 and maybe partying too much, leaving poor Heidi home with their four 4 kids? OK...Now I understand. That's a lotta kids, and they cry can make a bunch of noise and stuff. And, SEAL's a musical artist/genus and trying to sing and write all those meaningful songs, isn't he? 'Bout love, caring, understanding and world peace....why, I think he's gotta perfect right to party and run around on his wife...don't you? Someone has to stay home with ALL those kids...that's what the women are for, aren't they? They all just get on his nerves...that's all. So, no more whining you guys. Get off his case. This stuff just gets me alittle hot..., that's all... OK 'nuff said.
After all, He's one of my [T. Jan] heros, and gave us all lots of lovely tunes AND, full warning too I might add, didn't he?...when he said in his wonderful, loving tune 'CRAZY'..."though we're never gonna make it unless we're alittle CRAZY"....WOW! Well, this IS SAD news...ETTA JAMES died today.
About a year ago, I reported about her experience with dementia and her need for help for feeding, dressing and other basic personal hygiene needs and that she could not sign her name. I understood completely, as I have had experiences like that too.
Now, Etta has always been one of my very favorite bluzzz ladies. I'm just in 7th heaven when I hear her songs.. They speak to my heart, that's all.
So, ETTA JAMES thank you so much for bringing so much happiness to my life. T. Jan

'Baby, It's Cold Outside'... What UPCOMING EVENTS?...Hopefully Spring? Pretty Please, With Suger On Top

OK...It's January 19th, 2012...AND, 'Baby, It's COLD outside'...Well, more SNOWY than cold, I guess [T. Jan],,'bout 35 degrees, AND, the snow is melting...we had 'bout a foot yesterday...unheard of in this Olympia-Tacoma area. It's a real mess out there...as folks here are not use to driving....living in the snow. I've never seen over about 2-3 inches any winter before and maybe snow only once a year before now. I've lived here since 1990 and visited this area often since 1985.
The worst part for us [Steve and T. Jan]...are the falling trees...we live on 9 acres, and are surrounded by beautiful trees, BUT this snow's SO HEAVY and this is so new for these trees, that we've seen several big trees snap and fall over night. Our road off our property is blocked by two big trees, there's a tree down across our garden fence... breaking it and just missing some fruit trees and our truck, a scary tree bending over another camper and truck, near our house, but, looks like no damage Steve says...Yea!
We are so lucky...have plenty of food, water, etc. and wood for our stove...we're warm and fine. But, in Yelm...I know my Doctor's not able to get to her office and doing business over the phone. I have not heard 'bout other business's in town yet. The phone and computer are both working, Steve is happy to be able to stay at home right now. We've heard from recording artist JON BARONI/keys/harp/vocals, he's OK and at home. We've heard from neighbor STEPHEN K. HICKS/drums and owner of HOBBY STREET STUDIOS in Yelm...he's fine too. Both, JON BARONI and STEPHEN K. HICKS want to jam tomorrow night with my Steve, at STEVE HICK'S STUDIO...cool, my Steve can get there walking and Jon's close too. Jon heard from SCOTT ERCOLIANI/drums, he's OK. BUT,For now there's no gigs lined up and that looks like a good thing to me. [T. Jan]
And, MARTIN SALINAS/guitar/vocals told me [T. Jan] eleven days ago...that Sunday a week ago, that he'd return to Yelm in 10 days. He was driving back down to San Diego, California with a load from his home uphere I have NOT heard a word from him though...so, don't know where he's at....just heard another tree snap right now...again near the house!
Oh!.... Steve's checking in ...he heard it too...BUT, we don't see anything. 'Spose to warm up by tomorrow...Friday, 1/20/12. Right On! We're sure ready for that!!
NOTES: 12:45pm...A tree just hit the house!...we're OK.... 12:50 pm Another tree hit the house....they're snapping around us...I'm outta here...we're still OK. Don't see any damage, but sure scary and loud! T. Jan
5:30 pm...We're hanging in there, more trees and branches down, only damage a chestnut tree smashed. We're OK. Sheep safe in the barn, chicken's won't come out of their coop...and, that's just fine. No problem for the rabbits...cool rabbits. Weatherman says it will warm up tomorrow, but for now our beautiful trees are all covered with ice, many bending and snaping under their increased weight. We're on a generator for electricity, I hear our neighbor's generator going too.
6:40 pm -Just found a message on our phone from...TOD LEMKUHL/guitar checking in....he loves us and is amazed at the power and majesty of nature...trees going down 'round him. He's safe on his Dream Acreas near McKenna, WA. I'll give the message to Steve. Thanks, T. Jan...... Here's a note from the local newspaper: "Nisqually Valley News: Call Thurston County Emergency Management for questions about shelters and warming stations at 360-754-3360. Emergency officials are anticipating another 2 inches of snow or 1/4 of ice tonight. PSE doesn't anticipate restoring power for 3-4 days."
BUT Look! What I found on bluzzz vocalist queen, SHELLY ELY's FACEBOOK page for tonight, yes, I said tonight, What? Even with this storm and zero electricity. This was posted by Gary Crooks /guitar..."Anyone brave enough to take on the elements, please come down to Dawsons tonight with your axe and join Shelly Ely, Mike Slivka, Jho Blenis, and that guy that can't decide if he plays bass or guitar...Maybe I'll bring the seven string and do both at once. Come on down!
Dawsons is at the corner of 56th and South Tacoma Way in Tacoma 8 PM start."

This happened before 1990, I'd say in 1987 or 88. Before I moved to Yelm [1990]. I was a nurse in Spokane. On a private-duty pediatric home care job. That night, I had the evening shift...3 to 11:30 pm. It was winter and cold outside...around zero, I guess. With lots of fresh snow on the ground.
The family [parents of the child] I cared for had left for the evening., when the night nurse took over the care of 'our' child, the parents had not returned. The child had to have constant watching. So, when I went to my car, I knew the night nurse could not help me.
My car was buried in the snow, AND a plow had 'cleared' the streets of snow...blocking my car in a large snow bank. It was freezing and the snow was getting hard and icy.
First, I got the snow off the top my car..then, tried to chip away at the icy hill around the car....no go. It was dark, around midnight by now...I was all alone. I had recently returned from Yelm...where I'd been at an event....looked hopefully at the house with the nurse inside....wishing the parents would come home...OR...something.
Got into the car, sat at the driver's seat, shut my eyes and focused/blew/hoped etc. for a few minutes. Suddenly, I heard something outside...a voice? I opened my eyes and took a look.
A thin young man [20ish] was behind my car. He yelled 'did I have a shovel?' I did have a large window scrapper, would that do? He took it and started to 'shovel' at the snow bank...and just kept talking...fast, very fast....'he was going to his girlfriend's house a few blocks away...glad he saw me, it was so dark...how was I ever going to get out of here all alone, anyway?'...on and on and on.
He had cleared some of the 'snow hill' and thought he could push me out into the street. I started my car, while he pushed...and, my car was free....yay!..
Then, he came up to the window and asked if I could please drive him to his girlfriend's house...'It's only a few blocks away.'
Well, how could I say 'no'...after all he had done. SO, I opened the passenger-side door. He slipped into the seat....'Ready', he said strangely...
That's when I really looked at him....'What the ?' He had no coat, only a 'summer' cotton button-down shirt and light jeans....no gloves, no hat...but, what was so strange to me...NO socks!....just a pair of cold-looking leather shoes. He looked/seemed safe to me...just very odd.
He pointed straight ahead...that's where the girlfriend lived....'you can almost see it from here;, he said.
About 5 blocks ahead was FRED MEYERS Shopping Center...he pointed there. The parking lot was all lit .[spell] up, lights reflecting on the snow...seemed almost like day.
This was just fine he said...opening the door,getting out in the middle of the parking lot...
As he walked to the back of my car...I turned to thank him again....and I was all alone. Where did he go? I looked around...puzzled. 'Thank you' I said.

Bettye..this really happened to me...never found out any more about this Good Samaritan . I wonder about it some times. So, strange....there was NO place the young man could have gone to....so quickly. Don't know any more...but, he sure helped me out that night. Janet

Last Sunday night in Yelm...my Steve went to town...AND, at the 'OLD BLUE BOTTLE' that New Pizza Place @ 309 Yelm Ave East,...[right down town, you know] there was a really cool Upright BASSMAN named, STEPHEN LUCENO, from Olympia and his very cool friends, they were playin' jazz standards, and playing them well, says my Steve....he had a great night out. So, go see and support these guys if you have a chance. O.K?

Now, Steve plays all types of music, and loves playing jazz. He played jazz with BOB COZZETTI/keys/trumpet, TIM GEMMILL/Saxs, and, most the time it was FRED TAYLOR/drums...in THE COZZETTI AND GEMMILL JAZZ QUARTET way back when. Go HERE and HERE for links. Now, Steve's owned an upright bass before when he was withn Donna, go HERE. Says now he wishes he had never sold it...'Oh well...now we'll find another one of those'.
Because, that one Sunday night out changed everything, Steve's gone and fell in love with the upright bass... yes, my Steve's in love with the upright bass....AND, wants one RIGHT NOW...they are cool, really cool in fact, I must admit...'So...O.K. FLASHBACK: BUMMER...I'm So Wasted...A BAD Trip

Well, last night was a big bummer for me [T. Jan], 'cause I got wasted....A Bad trip. A Real BUMMER. For a moment, thought I was back in the early '70s again, when I was a young and foolish hippie, doin' all that kinda stuff. But, now Steve and I are much 'Older And Wiser', and, don't do ANY drugs, 'cause we know we 'gotta have a brain'....and, I'm keepin' all the brain cells I can find....YEA! for MY brain. End of advertisement. OK? T. Jan

What the heck...what happened last night?
As you know, I've been house-bound for over a year, and rarely get out, recovering from M.S. and brain damage 'cause by a very messed up spinal cord-neck surgery back in 1999.
Now, being in the same room for over a year has some good points AND some bad points.
First, the good points: I have experienced, lottsa time to MYSELF. Cool. AND, I love to ponder life. A very good thing, I must add. AND, I can do the computer too when Steve helps me on and I post stuff...sometimes a little too much posting for everyone's taste...well, I'm learning 'bout that too.

Next, for the bad points: I have experienced sitting alot, have gained lotsa pounds, and don't walk much, get swollen ankles, neck, arms, back and hip pain.

Yesterday, I went to the Doc, and we talked 'bout this. We decided to try a pain med that would help me sleep, as I'm up several times a night...so, Steve's up too, he's helping me to my chair, to ease this pain. BUT, this is NOT working for my fat water-swollen ankles, which need to be up more. She ordered a pain med to help....but, no go, 'I felt like a big cotton-head in lottsa pain' and, this morning I have a big hang over too. This is NOT working for me, I'll call her, my Doc, back this morning for something else.

Such great musicians live right in our neighborhood folks....Please go out and support them. OK. Yes, They all deserve it...AND, you'll have a really awesome time too.

From the post I saw on FACEBOOK, she'll be at The Washington Blues Society ... a Women in Blues photo shoot to be held in conjunction with the Sadie Hawkins Spectacular Blues Bash; February 14th at the Red Crane Restaurant in Shoreline, THE MARY McPAGE BAND will be performing. it's a Sadie Hawkin's Photo Shoot on February 14th with lots of other great bluzzz women of the Pacific Northwest. I [T. Jan] was diagnosed with M. S. in 1999, after many years of severe problem eating...hospitalized for Anorexia Nervosa in 1994, and now 100 pounds OVER weight, diabetes, house-bound for over a year, back and hip pain, need a walker for any ambulation etc. This just sounds right to me...gonna try it out starting today.

"Dear Steve Bartlett,

Hello and Happy Holidays!
I know it’s been a long time since many of you have heard from me, so here’s the latest news.
After an exciting and productive few years living and working in the New Jersey/New York City area,
I have returned to my home north of Seattle with my beautiful new bride, Demaree, and our three dogs, to settle down for a while. I will be teaching drums and running the newly-updated Ivy House studio, in addition to working on various recording and video projects and gigging whenever possible.
Currently in the production pipeline are: the free improv CD set with the Essex Improviser’s Collective; the Gary Lee Rollins CD; the second Inquest CD,; and a package of audio and video from
studio sessions in New Jersey with Gary, Bob Ackerman, and Rick Crane and takes from the January 2010 Cecil’s gig with Bob and Francesco Beccarro. These are all behind schedule, due to the delays caused by moving, working at Demaree’s river cottage in North Carolina (after Hurricane Irene), and fixing up the house and studio here in Washington. You’ll be hearing a lot more about these projects and more in the coming weeks.
The studio is open for business and running your choice of Pro Tools, Logic, or Cubase. We have made considerable upgrades and now are running on a 32x8 Mackie board. We also are doing
high-quality HD video shooting and editing and a number of other services.

Today, December 20th, is very sad for both Steve and I...MARTIN SALINAS/guitar/vocals our friend and WOW-guitarist, gos back home to San Diego, California and starts his new day-job selling window coverings and blinds to big businesses in that area. That all begins on December 28th states Salinas, in his recent phone call to me [T. Jan]. Martin's wife BARB SALINAS is already in San Diego. He says he'll return to this area often...Yea!

We first saw and heard MARTIN SALINAS at his club LIQUID SOUL COFFEE ROASTERS in McKenna, WA. on LIQUID SOUL's opening day...it was in 2007. JHO BLENIS/guitar and TERRY JAE/bass performed for the crowd. We were hooked and soon Steve BARTLETT ON BASS started performing with Salinas there weekly. Many awesome and talented musicians performed at LIQUID SOUL over the upcoming years. Top names in the Seattle-Tacoma area. Steve and I loved it all. As well as many jams and OPEN MIC nights...a cool place for live music lovers...and with wife BARB and daughter LINDSAY's alway's delicious cookin' a wonderful place for a fun musical evening in this area. OK...What's up 'round here music-wise lately? huh? Well first, have you heard all that CLATTER AND DIN up north in down town Seattle? Since MARTIN SALINAS/guitar/vocals is returning to San Diego, California this month, starts real work on December 28th, STEVE HICKS/drums thought it would be wonderful and arranged to have a CD highlighting Martin/guitar, of course, with Steve BARTLETT ON BASS and our neighbor and owner of HOBBY STREET STUDIOS in Yelm, STEVE HICKS doin' drums, The recording was created last week end in Seattle. Steve reports all the guys had a great time and CLATTER AND DIN is top of the line. A really cool place to do a recording and there were lots of promises of getting some fun studio work up there too. Last month KEVIN CHRISTENSEN/drums had his one and only 47th birthday party at THE STONEGATE in Tacoma. Well, we've known Kevin, when they both played with AL EARICK/guitar/vocals and SHERYL CLARK/sax, DON BENSON/drums [before Kevin/drums] in the band ROAD DAWGS [JON BARONI/keys was also in that band for a short while] along time ago and there were so many old friends there, Steve had a great time. Thanks Kevin. Just some of the folks that Steve mentioned to me were...AL EARICK/guitar/vocals, who forgot his guitar , but his wife Donna looked great. Cool Donna. JEFF WALLACE/keys was there and CAROL ROSE/ vocals. 'Hi' to you guys. Steve enjoyed playing several times with JERRY MILLER/guitar and also TIM HALL/guitar. Kevin always knew how to put on a party and there lots of cool people there.

Steve went up north of Everett to see his family for a Christmas get-together last week end too. He gave several of his family members copies of the new WALTER's BIRTHDAY CD. Steve and I've been really busy getting the farm ready for winter etc....you understand what I mean....there's sheep to shear, filling our barn with hay, chicken and rabbit feed...and chopping and stacking wood for our wood stove, then there's harvesting our garden goodies and putting them up for winter too. yum..

OK....Well, Steve did a tune by JAMES BROWN a few years ago when he played with Al Earick/guitar/vocals, and KEVIN CHRISTENSEN/drums, SHERYL CLARK/sax and other awesome area musicians in the band... ROAD DAWGS. This tune always started with Al asking if we all felt like chicken tonight? Of course, the answer was always 'Yes!...we did'. Then, the music would begin.

AND, now I'll ask you....'Feel like chicken tonight?....[HINT...'yes']. Tamborine Borrilli/vocals and owner of THE SPIRAL CAFE in Yelm, recently informed me, when I asked about her OPEN MIC each Thursday evening from 6:30 to 9:30 pm at the Spiral,... THAT this week, yep, this very week the remodeling would be finished, and her very famous, juicy and magically yummy "All Natural Rotisserie Chicken" would begin.

I have not talked to my father since I was in college and it was a strained relationship then. I don’t have many father daughter memories to fall back on with a smile. I did not get along well with him...
Am I crying for the little girl who remembers riding on her father’s shoulders as we go to cut down a Christmas tree up at Mt. Spokane? Or the girl who remembers her father tinkering with a car engine, while she sits at the wheel pretending to drive? Or the man he was that I never really got to know? The man my mother fell in love with. I wish I knew that man. The man who made my mother smile. The man I only got glimpses of.
My father was a putterer. He puttered around the garage, fixing things. He puttered in the yard, growing things. He was actually quite good with fruit trees, berries, gardens, plants. It was here that my father nurtured, not with people.
I don’t know what happened to my dad in Vietnam…but it made him hard. It made his ability to be a father, a husband, a happy person, impossible. I mourn for the loss of that person he could have been. The relationship we never had.
It is 2011 and my dad served in Vietnam before I was born. More than 40 years after that war it was Agent Orange that killed him."

What fun last night at THE SPIRAL CAFE in Yelm. We'd all expect all sorts of creepy crawly things on Halloween week end, but that's not what my Steve reported this morning at breakfast. WALTER's BIRTHDAY had a awesome time last night with great live music, and their new fantastic CD, just called 'WALTER's BIRTHDAY' available. Last Friday, Steve was honored to be asked to play again with MARTIN SALINAS/guitar, STEVE HICKS/drums, TERESA OAKMAN/vocals at UNCLE SAM's in Spanaway. I, T.Jan, enjoyed the evening too. Only second gig I've got to see in the last year, because of my health.

I had heard such great reports about Teresa's beautiful voice from my Steve and our neighbor, STEVE HICKS/drums, who owns HOBBY STREET STUDIOS, a fantastic place to go for recording or to hear fine music in this area. It was wonderful to get to hear Teresa myself. And, even though she had experienced a unexpected vehical breakdown up by Alder Lake, WA., with the help of many friends ans strangers, she was at the gig on time and ready to give a great performance. She had several of her fans at the gig...they all were enjoying themselves too. Thank you Teresa.

Martin will be leaving soon for California, we will miss him, what a awesome musical talent.

I hope some of Teresa's fans will send photos of this gig as promised soon...I'll post them here. It was a fine evening of live music.

ATTENTION all great musicians ....In our area there's TWO great music venues to check out, that's THE SPIRAL CAFE, ARTS and WELL BEINGNESS CENTER in Yelm and THE HIDDEN RIVER INN in Rainier. Cool places...each one.
BARTLETT ON BASS will be performing at each one in the next couple of weeks with that fantastic band he's in with his music buddies..Jon, Scott and Tod.
Since, I have some problems lately with mobility, don't worry it's just temporary...I haven't been at the gigs...BUMMER. [T. Jan]. But, I have a great idea, I'll tell later AND, remember, I don't kiss like a banana slug, explanation to follow.
Steve tells me everything that gos on at his gigs...so, I can report it here. He says THE SPIRAL CAFE is just beautiful, with a fantastic stage, dance floor and fun, it's open for many cultural events. THE HIDDEN RIVER INN has so many great things posted about it online..a fine Restaurant plus theatre area that can hold up to 500 guests for music events....cool. It's in a wildlife santurary too.
So,....I want to get to ALL of my hubby's gigs, even if I do it creatively...OK? So here's my new idea...if a venue is difficult for me to get to I can be carried on one of those liter-things, you know what I mean, like Cleopatra...I like those big feather fans too...it'll be fun you guys.... really. Just sit me down by that cool bassman with his beautiful smile, and let me hear the music..OK? That's all, I'll be in Bartlett heaven.
This is where that banana slug story begins...that beautiful smile.
Steve and I have been together since Nov. 1995...we use to do everything together...after all, we're best friends that's all. I was at every gig and rehearsal too. I even went up north to his day-job with him when I could walk, using only a cane.
One time, Steve was working in Federal Way...no, it was Kent. We camped out each night at a State Park nearby. Since we hadn't packed a tent we just put our sleeping bag on the ground and had no tent.
One morning...Steve was smiling THAT smile, and grinning ear to ear, as we got up for coffee.
"What's up Steve?"...this is what he said. During the night, he woke up...thinking I was kissing him, and he was telling me this was NOT the time or place, he's a shy guy....that's when, he heard my snoring beside him. WHAT???
He reached up to pull a HUGH Banana Slug off his lips , and flung it into the forest...I just kept snoring peacefully the whole night. I don't kiss like a banana slug you guys AND, snore very dantily too,.THE END. T. Jan

WALTER's BIRTHDAY CD

Wasn't last week end fun?...TWO very cool gigs....so much wonderful music... First, Friday's WALTER's BIRTHDAY CD Release Party at THE SPIRAL CAFE in Yelm went very well indeed with a packed crowd AND lots of CD's sold. A great sucess. That's TOD LEMKUHL/guitar/vocals, SCOTT ERCOLIANI/drums, JON BARONI/keys/harp/vocals and of course...STEVE BARTLETT/bass, as WALTER's BIRTHDAY. An awesome background video by SCOTT ERCOLIANI, opened the show as JON BARONI sang his DAKOTA RODEO...written by JON BARONI the late TED HALL, Steve reported that it was all very touching. Then, THE SHELLY ELY JAM in Spanaway on Sunday at UNCLE SAM's AMERICAN BAR AND GRILL...lots of fun, STEVE BARTLETT/bass was filling in for TERRY JAE/bass.... well, first we all know Ms. Bluzzz, vocalist SHELLY ELY's always a blast...and amazing JHO BLENIS was on guitar...WOW, What a great night of music.
But,...the big surprise of the night was.....MARTIN SALINAS/guitar/vocals came into jam with these great musicans. This was the first sighting of SALINAS since the closing of his LIQUID SOUL COFFEE ROASTER's in McKenna on August 12th. He told Steve,,,he'll be in the area for about the next six months, then plans to return to his old home town of San Diago, CA. We'll miss you Martin.

So, what's next?....On September 9th, a private gig THE BOW-WOW BASH in Olympia is set up with BARTLETT/bass playing again with that fine band, WALTER's BIRTHDAY. JON BARONI will be arranging all the details.

Steve first played with Sheryl in the band first called FUNKINGROOVIN then the name was changed to ROAD DAWGS, 'round 2005 in Tacoma, WA. Members of that band were Al Earick/guitar/vocals, DON BENSON/drums, later KEVIN CHRISTENSEN/drums, STEVE BARTLETT/bass/vocals, JON BARONI/keys/vocals [Jon only in the early days that Steve was in this band]. OK, OK,.....we're ALL ready for this....The WALTER's BIRTHDAY CD RELEASE PARTY on Friday, August 26th, at THE SPIRAL CAFE ARTS and WELLNESS CENTER in Yelm.
This new CD is awesome and a keeper, it's called just 'WALTER's BIRTHDAY' and that says it ALL....Cool, all music especially written by these very talented musicans.. AND, the CD will be available, of course, at this very special event. So, none of us want to miss this fun night of live music in Yelm. st_robert will be the sound engineer for the night and recording the evening too. So, come early so you won't miss a thing.
It all begins at 8:30 with a special guest performer...to warm us all up and get our dancing feet wet...THEN...at 9 pm,...the WALTER's BIRTHDAY band will begin and perform all of the new CD tunes along with all our favorite WALTER's BIRTHDAY tunes until 12 midnight. OK, OK...I know we're all waiting to know just where was BARTLETT last night anyway.....Well, I have it from a loyal and trusted source, that he was with that 'Ol' BLUE BOTTLE GANG from 8 to 10pm last night...out on the town..partying again.

Yep...he was seen at LIQUID SOUL COFFEE ROASTER's in McKenna, celebrating 'little Michelle's' birthday party. Now, that the BLUE BOTTLE's gone, Little Michelle is working with our friend MARTIN SALINAS/guitar/vocals and owner of Liquid Soul.

There were lots of happy musicians there last night 'cause not just was it Liquid Soul's regular THURSDAY's OPEN MIC crowd there, but BLUE BOTTLE's old CREW and birthday well-wishers too, led by that nortorious newly wed known as Michelle Jones and her side-kick and partner in crime hubby Flemming Olsen. It was they who let me [T. Jan] in on this little surprise for 'little Michelle'... OK? Cool Now you know the whole story.

Now, Steve had a great time and there was plenty of musicians and music. too...a few of the musicians that BARTLETT mentioned to me were...... that talented Recording Artist, JON BARONI/keys/harp/vocals. From THE MANDOLIN CAFE's Sunday night OPEN-MIC fame DENNY FOREMAN/jazz guitar/vocals and RUSS HARRIS/congas/harp, BLUEWAVE's ERIC DELOME/guitar/vocals. Amanda/guitar/vocals, Carol/guitar/vocals...you know...Carol and Kenny, that Carol...cool. thanks you guys...and of course, there was DAVID WAYNE/guitar and MARTIN SALINAS/guitar/vocals and more folks that my hubby didn't get to have a beer with but, enjoyed their music just the same.

Vocalist/ G.W TAYLOR called us yesterday...but, he was in a performance across town...and could not make it last night.
That's the way it was last night. Well,... about the way it was...it's pretty darn close anyway. OK? Good enough...print it. T. Jan.

"Jazz Jam Lives!" the jazz and blues (and other surprises)jam session is held the last Sunday of every month 4-7 at the Thumbnail Theater in Snohomish. The Tim Noah Thumbnail Theater is a non-profit organization and I am excited about having our Jam Session under their wing.
Remember that this is an all ages, all levels jam session with a house rhythm section (Piano, Bass and Drums)
There is a suggested donation of $5 per person ($10 max per family) to help cover the costs.

This morning, I [Jan] called owner of 'Liquid Soul Coffee Roasters', Martin Salinas/guitar/vocals...'What a wonderful, excellent cup of Liquid Soul fresh roasted coffee, Steve made this morning.'

Steve and I really love great coffee, Liquid Soul is one of the finest coffee roasters around. The fresh roasted bag of 'Organic Java' that Steve bought recently from Liquid Soul, was going down Smooth and Deliciously this morning...'Oh, my mouth's watering again just thinking about it!' I had to congratuate Martin myself...what a fine product he makes.

He was happy to hear from me. Then, he said.....'Liquid Soul' would be having a fantastic last night of music in a few weeks...on August 12th. Wants everyone to come in and have a great time...'Let's PARTY DOWN', he said.

Well, what sad news...'Liquid Soul' closing?...I just didn't want to hear or believe it.

Not only is Liquid Soul's coffee the best...MARTIN SALINAS is one of the very best too, a 'guitarist's guitarist', a world class talent...just ask anyone who's heard him play. Steve and I will miss him greatly. Martin will let me know more as things unfold and I'll report them here.

For now though...go get some awesome fresh roasted coffee before it's too late....roasted right there in McKenna. And, tonight there's live music too... an OPEN MIC starting at 6pm, going to 9pm. They serve sandwiches/salads/soups and delightful desserts. Beer/wine. Kids are always welcome and there's dancing. Maybe, Steve'll drop in to relax and have a fine roasted cup of Joe.... and bring a bag home for me too....'Please Steve,...pretty please...will ya? please Steve.'

Just writing a quick note to let you know that Harlequin Productions has extended the run of Summer in the Sixties for one more weekend due to popular demand.
That means if you haven't been down to see it yet, you have four more chances.
Or, if you loved it the first time, come see it again. One delighted patron told me he'd seen the show 11 times! A lady standing nearby piped up "I've been to eight."
It's an incredible audience, people come in costume, they dance, they sing along; it's quite a party.
And the band's pretty good, too:

I remember glancing out our window.....seeing our neighbor-boy Lucas and his 'commando' six year old friends crawling slowly toward our noisy squakin' and very alarmed ducks and chickens....all boys on their stomachs, looking very serious indeed...using their elbows to pull themselves along towards their intended targets.

Well, really now...my computer went out and then.....while it was in the shop, I found out I really enjoyed just being by MYSELF and getting to know me...cool. So, kept it off to be alone and to just be... and just ponder for awhile.

Tonight, I'm so happy to announce.....my fantastic, world class bassman, hubby Steve Bartlett will be performing in that awesome band...named 'WALTER'S BIRTHDAY' with world class musicians, Tod Lemkuhl/guitar/vocals, Scott Ercoliani/drums and Jon Baroni/keys/vocals/harp in Yelm at THE SPIRAL CAFE. Start time: 9 to 9:30...there will be an opening act beginning at 8 pm, so come earily for great seats. Tickets are only $10.00 each....what a great price for a night on the town.This event wil lbe recorded live by st_robert. Come down and enjoy the fun.The Location is 201 Yelm Ave, first floor. WOW! It's March 20th... Tonight's a special night! KENNY WILLIAMSONs/drums 69th birthday. He's 69 today AND still playing drums for Shell at THE SHELLY ELy JAM 7 pm at UNCLE SAMs BAR AND GRILL tonight....Cool.

Look Shell....Both Kenny and I are older than you...Wow amazing.

As, Shelly said...'SECURITY will be in place incase he gets outta hand'...I [Jan] say...'We can all hope, can't we Shell?...He quite a drummer....I bet, he can play the drums with one hand tied behind his back.' Have a great night off DYLAN LANNY ENGLAND. On bass will be TERRY JAE. Shell didn't say who's on guitar...we all know it's someone special AND, with Shelly on vocals it'll be a good one. That's from 7 til 10:30ish...Fun.

Now for LIQUID SOUL COFFEE ROASTERs in McKenna. There will be a OPEN MIC,hosted by David Wayne on Thursday evening st 6 pm.
Last Friday night, 3/18, WALTERs BIRTHDAY with my Steve playin bass, played at Liquid Soul from 8 til 11pm. Steve was beaming when he got home. 'Wonderful Gig'....was the feed back I received from EVERYONE the next day. Lottsa people there! Cool. Wish I could of been one of them. Soon. THE MANDOLIN CAFE in Tacoma. Tonight's the night for DENNY FOREMAN AND FRIENDs OPEN MIC. Starts at 6pm, sign-up at 5:30. That's every Sunday night. RUSS HARRIS/congas/harp usually helps Denny host this fun jam....but, nothing about this gig is posted on Russ's FACEBOOK page, So, I'm not sure if Russ will be there or not tonight. The MANDOLIN CAFE is alot of fun and they have music several nights a week. They have wonderful soups, sandwiches and desserts too. A really fun place to hang out and enjoy live music.

STEVE BARTLETT/BARTLETT ON BASS...Well, my Bartlett performed with the band WALTERs BIRTHDAY in McKenna, at LIQUID SOUL last Friday night with a record-breaking crowd...nice to see so many old and new faces...Welcome and thank you folks. Everyone in the band had a great time too.
Steve was planning to jam today with his friends...and, we have been doing so many new things.... kinda over-loaded down on the farm,..... starting our garden, breeding sheep/rabbits, raising new baby chicks etc. WOW! Is this fun...we're keeping very busy. Who would have thought?...we'd have to teach our sheep all about reproduction? Funny things we all take for granted. huh? No music reported for next week. I'm outta here. Jan
