JONI MITCHELL....Coma or NO Coma Folks....What's the Truth?

found photo on Wikipedia/see link cc
Today, while looking for some news about music. I came across this post from VARIETY online. JONI MITCHELL's Official Website, and WIKIPEDIA [photo credit] denies that Joni Mitchell, 71, is in a coma....'B' ah..'B...But wait'...THEN, it gos on to say that.....quote, "  close friend Leslie Morris filed a petition to obtain conservatorship over the Grammy-winning artist."..
I may be kinda odd folks, but 'I' wouldn't do that just because...would you? Sounds like something serious is going on in that California Hospital to me. What's the truth, anyway?
I wrote that Joni collapsed last month, and was rushed to the hospital. [see MY story HERE] Every post that I read back then said ...don't worry, it was nothing serious, but it's been quite a long time now. what's really going on? I guess, we'll just have to wait and see.....I'll keep an eye out and post anymore info that I find here. O.K? Jan

Updated: RICHARD PRYOR Singing Nobody Wants You When You're Down and Out

Richard Pryor/see photo credit
HEATHER JONES/vocals reminded me once again on her FACEBOOK page, that RICHARD PRYOR and HERE  started out as a singer, NOT a comic....I really love his style and voice. Listen and see what you think. Such a painful life...I'm gonna look up more about his life and post it here. O.K? But, while I look up more about his life...enjoy hearing him sing. Jan
O.K., I'm back,...you know, I loved Pryor's voice,,,,he reminds me of one of my favorite jazz musicians who also had a drug habit and hard life...namely CHET BAKER. Go HERE to read MY story about Chet Baker. Here's a video link of the album 'The Best of Chet Baker' [thanks Jazz n' Blues Experience].
Now, I'll find more about Pryor...be right back.....
I read about Pryor in .WIKIPEDIA..and, there's NO mention about his singing...BUT, it's so beautiful Lotsa stuff about his  adult humor, awards and comedy, which he is known for. He openly talked about his drug habit  on the videos I scanned on YOUTUBE. example: 'Richaed Pryor on the Johnny Carson Show, 1983' [thanks Sharon Schmidt].
I remember when Pryor caught himself on fire in June of 1980 after drinking and freebasing cocaine. Rescue workers found him quote 'walking quietly about a mile and half from home', His daughter, stated that Pryor ' poured high-proof rum over his body and set himself ablaze in a bout of drug-induced psychosis' Later, he stated that he had tried to commit suicide.. Those burns covered over one half of his body and he was in the burn unit for six months.
In 1990 he was diagnosed with M. S.and started using a scooter to get around. He died in 2005 from a heart attack..
There was lotsa recognition for his support of civil rights over the years and his Black Comedy.... Kings of Black Comedy Heroes of Black Comedy, 100 Greatest Stand-ups of All Time., and in 2005 in the UK.. The Comedian's Comedian.
.
He was awarded many Grammys etc. here's a quote: " Pryor won an Emmy Award (1973) and five Grammy Awards (1974, 1975, 1976, 1981, and 1982). In 1974, he also won two American Academy of Humor awards and the Writers Guild of America Award. The first ever Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor was presented to him in 1998. Pryor is listed at Number 1 on Comedy Central's list of all-time greatest stand-up comedians.[23]"

The Power of Music....'Did One of Your Favorite Songs Change Our World?'

the power of music/see photo credit
I read a post today from BBC NEWS about songs changing the world. That got me thinking about the power of music and using it with awareness....seeing how it can influence the choices of those listening to it. What is it [the song] saying? I would NOT choose a song about killing or dying for example I love life. [Jan] of course.
O.K., 'What came first,....the action or the thinking about that very action?' Well, I've seen over the years that songs seemed to make it all right...and, many times we have music playing and don't even think about what we are hearing....pretty soon...everybody's doing this or that, or buying a certain product. It's the 'IN' thing to do....or acceptable. How come? Could our brains hear it when we don't? Suddenly it sounds familiar AND we want it?....WOW.
Perhaps we think it's our free choice or idea...but, really it's our brain's programing.
The article from BBC was very interesting, and fun to read, click on the link above and enjoy yourself. Jan

It's all music. Music has the power to mess with your brain in every way possible. Many types of classical music can make you sad or angry.

BOBBY HOFFMAN's EXTREME JAM or.'SOUL SPIDERZ' at STONEGATE Tomorrow

from Steve Merriams facebook page/see link
First, let me tell ya there's a wonderful jam at STONEGATE tomorrow starts, 'round 8:30 pm, I guess, in Tacoma..it's .called 'The Bobby Hoffman Jam'.....some very cool musicians are all meeting there for this EXTREME kinda jam.....usually featuring a theme...you know, like, for example, the Beatles, or Beach Boys ...and they aim for that kinda music for that jam. So, everybody's on the same page etc. But, of course, if you don't 'speak' Beatles or Beach Boys etc. they'll let you do what you do...and have a great time doing it.
I've seen BOBBY HOFFMAN/drummer run around directing traffic at his jam...it's sure fun to watch and listen to. Just get outta his way is all I'll say...and...'I' think he should wear a helmut too, when he slides onto that stage on his stomach and you find him at your feet, smiling and looking up at you with those wide eyed blue eyes of his. You know he likes you that's all, just keep playing, it's gonna be O.K..
Well, Steve BARTLETT ON BASS will be there tomorrow night Sunday,, April 26th playing bass. STEVE MERRIAM/guitar [photo link] asked him last night  AND, Steve's resting up for tomorrow night as I write this. Gotta be in shape for this kinda thing and he didn't get much time to get ready.
THE STONEGATE has good food, have a bite to eat, a few cold beers or hard drinks....bring your axe and join this Extreme Fun. Jan

RINGO Into ROCK AND ROLL HALL of FAME, Last of the 'Fab Four' to be Inducted

THE BEATLES/see photo credit
Today, I saw that the last of the BEATLES.... and HERE  was inducted into the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME, as a solo artist, for musical excellance....WOW.'really groovy...look at RINGO an dHERE  go.'. AND, not only THAT, but it was his buddy,, PAUL McCARTNEY  and HERE who did the honors, it was reported on THE ROLLING STONE. today.
Anyway,it seems that Ringo has to thank  McCartney for alot  more than the presentation of this awsesome honor....but, McCartney was the one who first started the ball -a-rolling about is long time friend being considered in the first place....Thank you, Paul.
Ringo and McCartney are the only two Beatles lrft. JOHN LENNON died on December 8th, 1980, and GEORGE HARRISON in November in 2001..
The Beattles were my first love way back in '64, my girl friend, Astrid and I, pretended we had 'English Accents, took a few guitar lessons [mainly so we could look cool and carry 'round guitarss wore 'go-go' boots'....Astrid called me...Mrs. Harrison, I called her Mrs. McCartney....we had fun, even though we were kinda goofy.
Congradulations Ringo. And again thanks Paul. 'Groovy', Jan

Making it BIG TIME at Those Music Festivals..' Money, Money, Money Makes the World Go Around'

TEDDY LEE HOOKER by J.A Rose-Bartlett cc
O.K., we just had a great time in Tacoma, WA. at THE GRAY SKY BLUES MUSIC FESTIVAL [we paid only a $10.00 cover at the Swiss after 3 pm,]...So, this post caught my eye today...about the type of BIG? money that's being made in all those Music Festivals. This is what I read in the HUFFINGTON POST.
Well, I have many personel experiances with these these kinda things..'cause, I know that...well frankly most, musicians just are NOT paid enough. Not even minanum wage,....even way below, not counting, all the time rehearsing, and the practice that goes into putting on a show.
Remember, those musicians are doing a JOB and need to get paid just like you do from your job....it's not 'party-time' for them,..only for you, their job is to make you relax and have a good time.  This just goes to show, once again, that musicians are just plain amazing people that must do it for the love of music and their hope of making it big someday [or even a decent living]. Most musicians have a 'day job' too, besides their music. They end up giving up all those evenings, and staying up late many nights for thei music andr dream. And, I don't see many 'rich' musicians around. Seems like more and more Clubss are hurting, and they include meals as part of the wage, some include a drink or two as well.
Now, those 'Music Festivals' that do pay more than Music Clubs, by the way...but, NOT really a hugh amount more, they seem to be  sought out by everyone and a prize for sure...first,.they have to be found, and if hired by the Festival, it may take a wait of up to a year for that chance to play. many of them [festivals] are out of town, and a hotel or motor home is needed..
In the '70s, Steve played at least, 6 nights a week, in town and got $50.00 a night...EVERY WEEK. Now days,  A good musician has one gig a week...WOW, He may make 550.00 or more ,get some tips and food with 2 drinks. the 'wife' pays for her own meal etc.
The Huffington Post post says that those festivals are a reminder of those 'hippie' days of the '60s ....BUT, where's the money the musicians used to get? They don't see it. Festivals usually last no more than a few days too.  Musician's gotta eat and live all year long. One or two Festivals a year ain't gonna do it.
I.ve heard that County Fairs are profitable....BUT, along wait time to get in the 'circult' [years]. Once you get in..no one wants to leave and give a new guy their spot...of course, I understand. Who would?.
Casinos are going more and more to D.Js. but, that seems to still hold the dream for many musicians.
This is my opinion, but, it seems more and more difficult for musicians to find steady jobs, they have to play with several bands at once to get opprtunity to play regularly [spell?]. People don't seem to be going out as much as they use to. Many Clubs are shutting down, going to D.Js and trying to make ends meet in other creative ways...Bingo,...anyone?
O.K., I'm gonna say one more thing that I see. Many great musicians and Club owners too start drinking too much after awhile and get into trouble. Maybe part of this problem is because of this kinda stuff. Jan

LOU RAWLS - Tobacco Road (1963)...Check This Out, Will Ya?

LOU RAWLS, see photo credit
Steve's ol' music buddy from High School... MIKE KARNES sent us this video link of 'Tobacco Road' [thanks Dániel Görög]] by LOU  RAWLS and HERE from 1963...we loved it. I'll check out Rawls today and post what I find. O.K? Jan
AND, here's what I found....
Rawls was a awesome vocalist, FRANK SINATRA said [ a quote from WIKIPEDIA, "]  that Rawls had "the classiest singing and silkiest chops in the singing game". O.K., now, that's from Sinatra who knows what he's talking about.
Rawls won three [3] GRAMMYS, for his voice. He was a 'voice actor'...so, I'd guess that means he did...???   I'll check, it must be something very cool. .he wrote and produced songs too. Well, Rawls was an actor and had a cool voice...could that be a 'voice actor'? Maybe.
When he was a young man, Rawls was friends with SAM COOKE and CURTIS MAYFIELD in Chicago.
In 1958 he was pronounced dead from a car crash, stayed in a coma for three days, then recovered...it took over a year....WOW...amazing.
He did some vocal/harmonies for his buddy Sam Cooke, on Cooke's recordings  of "Bring It On Home to Me" and "That's Where It's At,"  In '62, he made a jazz album with LES McCANN and the recording of 'Tabacco Road' below, he was  put into the National 'lime light' and became very well known in our country. Jan

SASS Doing THE GLOW By BONNIE RAITT on the Upright Bass...All Grown Up AND JAZZY

upright bass see photo credit
O.K. Here's something new and kinda outta the box for SHELLY ELY/vocals and the rest of SASS. Sounds like it's a 'grown up' song ..'specially with that upright bass.
Here's 'The Glow' [thanks nismans] by Bonnie Raitt. I'm gonna find out more about BONNIE RAITT and HERE and post it below tomorrow, gotta go for now. Jan
AND, this is what I found..she's a really good guitarist...rated number 86 in ROLLING STONE's '100 Greatest Guitarists of all Time'. Well, of course she is. I found out Raitt's older than I am by a year...let's see...hum, what else? We can ALL see that she's really pretty, has red hair. You know, it seemed that today everything I read seemed to place her value on such silly things like if her music that was a 'commercial success' [spell?] or not. Who cares if it made a penny or not or what everybody else thinks? Her music always 'touched ME' it talked MY language. I love her stuff, that's what's impordant [looks funny..spelll?] to me.
