BUDDY: BUDDY HOLLY STORY ....The Focus is On His Music, Where It Should Be

by Brett Jordan cc, see link
Well, this is what I found online this morning...A review of the musical, 'Buddy:The Buddy Holly Story' from LANCASTER ONLINE, it was written  By JANE HOLAHAN | Entertainment Editorand called 'Review: 'Buddy Holly Story' Strong on Music, Soft on Story'...Well, 'Catchy Title' I thought, but no one wants their life to be only 'soft', do they? Or their music either. After all, it's THEIR life, or music.. So, this is serious business, and I decided to read all about it.AND, I did.....So, what we have here IS a 'Review of a Review'...O.K?
First, I'd better find out what I can online about this 2013 musical.... So, I found this video on YOUTUBE, a copy of  'Buddy: Buddy Holly Story'[thanks Chris Salmon]...must be it, same name anyway. AND, so my review of a review begins.
Jane Holahan was abolutely correct, [check her review at above link]...the music is just amazing, and I loved it. AND, there IS so much fantastic music,  I wanted to hear every tune again and again.  I'll be happy to look elsewhere to find more about our hero BUDDY HOLLY's human life. Of course, his life was incredible. Just because this musical does not focus on Buddy Holly's life, but music it's no reflection of Holly's importance in anyway or on his influence on early rock and roll.. Listen to this, Buddy Holly Tribute List on YOUTUBE to make sure.... 'Tribute to Buddy Holly'[thanks  by Rebecca Michael ]
Remember, Holly died at the very young age of 22. WOW...He did an amazing amount of Rock and Roll, with his band 'The Crickets'in that short of time. A real musician's music IS their life...if you know what I mean. They live music.
Thank you Buddy Holly...I love you. Jan

A Totally Silent World...Will It Drive You Crazy?.....Maybe

by ishane cc, see link
I found this very interesting post today about sound and frequency called 'MUSIC That Burns' from KRULWICH WONDERS ..AND, this bought up the question for me...Music is powerful....Would a world in silence drive people insane? So, I starting exploring the internet to find out more. This is what I found....Sounds are good for us, and, of course, that means music. Watch this video called 'Can Silence Actually Drive You Crazy' [thanks Veritasium] and decide for yourself. O.K?
This is what I learned...Maybe a person could go CRAZY in a silent world. The video brought up some unexpected thoughts for me....our bodies have the ability to morph or change within seconds to a new environment,, for example our heartbeat, breathing, swallowing, not only became more apparent, bu,it seemed to even have a difference in the 'texture' or the way we normally experience them... Someone mentioned their body may have re-calabrated to a new and different environment and., brought new sensations that they'd never been aware of before....you know, I've read some things about idiot servant's...and autistic folks lives and  their amazing, strange behaviors...they maybe using untapped abilities that we ALL have, just not discovered yet. Really we're ALL genius, remarkable and different than each other...AND, that's the way it's supposed to be.
We all know that music can alter moods....but,maybe it can do alot more than that....really change our physical world...heal our bodies, clean our damaged environment or even move mountains...WOW, that's a thought, isn't it? Only time will tell. Please click at the link and watch this video about silence HERE. Jan

'Peeps' With 'CHICK' COREA In Our Basket For Easter....Sure, Off To 'Spain'

by Alberto Cabello Mayero cc, see link
Happy Easter, did the Easter Bunny visit you guys last night? There was more than chocolate eggs and peeps in our basket....WOW, there was another 'CHICK' COREA and HERE and 'Spain' 1972 [thanks luchozepp.]...Steve loves to do this tune, so we're going over it right now, before we start in, in the green house and garden.
Who is this 'Chick' anyway.....well, he's cool. WIKIPEDIA says he's " is an American jazz and fusion pianist, keyboardist, and composer." I know that he had his own band called 'Into Forever', that he created in the '70's....that's who's doing 'Spain' on the link above, I bet, that's his most well-known tune  . I'll look up more for this post.
Corea was born in the U.S.A., his father was a jazz trumpeter. So, As a child, Chick' was exposed to alot of jazz by his father. When he was 4 years old he started the piano and later [8] the drums. He learned to use the piano as a percussion instrument. Steve says Corea's tunes have a 'pulse' to them..' the pulse on the bass is not on ones, it's ands."...whatever that means?{Jan] You musicians will know. O.K? Most of his stuff has a 'latin' sound to it, that I really like...it's again, Jan.
Corea played gigs in high school, wearing an old tuxedo that his father gave him...He played HORACE SILVER's and HERE stuff in a trio at a local [New York] jazz club. An early recording of his was a album with BLUE MITCHELL, it features Chick's tune ' You Stepped Out of a Dream' [thanks 1blue1]....I'll try and find a copy and post it.
I read he's won aleast one GRAMMY, and I personality love all his stuff with BELLA FLECK and HERE and BOBBY McFERRIN and HERE . I'll post some music video links below and feature the video 'Spain'.from  luchozepp. Here's the only thing that the video page says:"Uploaded on Jul 27, 2008

Celebrate The QUEEN OF JAZZ, ELLA FITZGERALD's Birthday Next Week

by guyman22 cc, see link
O.K....ELLA FITZGERALD and HERE was also known as 'The Fist Lady of JAZZ'. She was a jazz vocalist, did some acting too, and her birthday was on April 25th, 1917. I read about her in eNEWS JAZZ. But, she's not difficult to find online or anywhere...her music's everywhere. Really. With over 70 albums to her name and over 40 million copies sold, you can't miss her.
When she was a child, Ella loved to dance, She started singing in her church at a young age. But, in her teen years, her mom died and she ended up in an orphanage. Then, Ella ran away and was homeless.
Her luck changed in November '34 when she was about age 17, she won a $25.00 top prize  at THE APOLLO THEATER in Harlem on 'Amateur Night'. This is what happened, always loving dance Ella went to the 'Amateur Night' that night planning to dance, but was intimidated by the dance duo that was there with her and changed her mind at the very last second and sang two of her favorite tunes....The Boswell Sister's 'Judy' and 'The Object Of My Affection' AND, the rest is history.
Ella Fitzgerald won...well, some places say 13, other places say 14 GRAMMY AWARDS during her singing career. It was alot either way...Go Ella.
She won THE KENNEDY CENTER for the PERFORMING ARTS METAL OF HONOR, THE PRESIDENTIAL METAL of FREEDOM, HARVARD UNIVERSITY gave her an HONOR DOCTORATE of MUSIC and GEORGE AND IRA GERSHWIN AWARD...for Lifetime Achievement...there's even more too, but my finger's running out of steam for now. Have to rest for awhile. BUT,...Believe me when I just say...'She's won alota awards.' .... See.WIKIPEDIA and check it all out.
Steve thought I should say something about her death, because Ella's so wise and brave.. Ella died in 1996. She had both legs amputated at the knees three years eariler from diabetes, she was in a wheelchair..and,.loved to spend her days out in her garden, listening to the birds, smelling the air, feeling the wind on her face and hearing her grand daughter Alice laugh. On her final day, she was wheeled back inside after 'bout an hour outside.....and from WIKIPEDIA  "  she looked up with a soft smile on her face and said, "I'm ready to go now." She died in her home on June 15, 1996 at the age of 79..

.I'll post some links of Ella's tunes and other related video links below. Jan

Meeting ALICE STEWART Last Night....AND, Ready for A Cane?

by Gamma Man cc, see link
A fine musical lady, that I've admired for along time is ALICE STEWART and HERE. AND, guess what? We met her in person for the very first time last night....well, this is how it all happened. O.K?
Steve and I just love music, that's all. And so, last night we decided at the very last moment before starting dinner, to just forget dinner, to go to Centralia instead...for music and a jam we'd heard of last week. Well, now we're talkin'. What can be better than music? Except...more music. So, we happily took off...so excited that forgot my walker or wheelchair...Whoops. [we had the bass, of course]  But, it's O.K. folks, don't worry 'cause I won't give up ever.
When we got to THE JUNCTION SPORTS BAR in Centralia, we stopped the car. That's when Steve looked alittle worried...how was I gonna get in the place? He said he wouldn't just leave me in the car while he played. i had an idea...get a chair and I'd 'walk' it into the building. Yeah...it worked, and I sat down right inside the front door.
The Junction has no stairs or ramps, if you have your own wheels it would be a breeze I'm sure, to get inside. I did not see the bathrooms, so I don't know if they're big enough for wheelchairs and people at the same time. BUT, I'll check that out next time.
I'm sure there will be a NEXT time 'cause this place was lotsa fun. A big stage. Cold beer.  Seasoned experienced musicians were playing when we arrived. BARTLETT signed in and soon he was called up stage. Here comes that BIG smile of his, he was dancing, singing and having the best time [me too].
Converse All Stars
Earlier, I'd noticed a quiet lady sitting over on the side of the room. She had really cool shoes on  HERE, and looked so familiar..was it?....yes, it was HER... Alice Stewart. Steve went over an introduced himself to her. They'd talked on the phone before when she'd needed a fill in bassman for a gig. But, Steve had a gig already booked for that night, and missed performing with her.
Alice came over to my table after the jam and we talked. WOW!...Alice Stewart. She helped 'walk' me and my chair back out to our car, with Kirby, Pierre and other new friends. Thank you.
I'm sure ALL this was a sign from above....great music on the way AND I'm ready for a cane. Today, I'll get my old cane out....AND walk. Jan

Gigs, Gigs Gigs...Coming Out Our Ears....What You Say?..Pigs?...NO, More Gigs ,You Know...Music

by Qfamily cc, see link
NOT pigs...that's gigs....I know, I've talked about pigs kinda before, well THE PIG BAR anyway, 619 Legion, in Olympia, so I understand the mix up...gigs and pigs kinda sound alike, don't they, BUT, they're NOT the same..THE PIG BAR....that's where THE D.C. JAZZ  QUARTET plays every Tuesday night from 8 to 10 pm., with smooth jazz by DON COHEN/vocals, DAVEN TILLINGHAST/guitar, MARK STOUT/trombone and my Steve BARTLETT/ON BASS. Come on down next Tuesday and see. O.K?
But wait...there's more , lotsa gigs, I know we live on a farm, but not just farm animals coming in all the time. Music from just 'bout everywhere..Seattle, Tacoma...well, all the way down to Centralia. All kinds of music too..besides jazz, there's rock and roll, blues, funk, soul, even some country?...just everything. I'm in heaven, so is my Bartlett. BUT, I won't 'spill the beans'...until everything's set AND just right...so, stay tuned. O.K?
by TurkZilla cc, see link
Oh yea...farm animals, that reminds me...we had another lamb born this week. It's black with white marking on it's head...a little girl. Beautiful. Also, Steve's teaching those baby turkey's to fly...I mean it,...they really undestand him. Steve built a 'turkey-run'....he puts them inside and yells 'fly'as he flaps his arms up and down. They watch him and listen, really...and, by golly, if they don't start running and flapping those little golden turkey wings as fast as they can...they ALL end up running into each other and falling down AND, no one has got off the ground yet, but soon...I just know it. BARTLETT is a great 'Turkey-Daddy'. I love him so....a truly gentle-man. 'goble-goble' Jan

'We Were Born Before The Wind,' That's True...INTO THE MYSTIC' By VAN MORRISON

Bartlett +Shelly Ely 2008 by J.A.Rose-Bartlett cc
O.K...I did this tune way back when with BARTLETT ON BASS...'into The Mystic' [thanks Mrsotaviaparauna] by VAN MORRISON and HERE. What a beautiful song. AND, guess who else does it?...Well, it's our friend, SHELLY ELY.
But, this post is mostly about Van Morrison. O.K?
First off, I found out he's from Ireland...Oh...that explains his voice,..it's like no one elses...that's it,..I love his 'celtic' sound, kinda mystical and mysterious to me. And, 'Into the Mystic' [thanks Mrsotaviaparauna] fits that sound just right...what I'm trying to say is, well is...ah, it has that quality to it, reminds me of some ancient, olde English-Irish poetry.
Morrison's sound has been described as a mixture of gospel, blues, soul, jazz, rock, transendental, mystical, folk and celtic by many others. Here's a quote from WIKIPEDIA...."  Morrison is widely considered by many rock historians to be one of the most unusual and influential vocalists in the history of rock and roll."
I read that Van Morrison has won over 6 Grammys in the years we have been enjoying his tunes, has won BRIT AWARD for OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION to MUSIC,  and been placed in the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME and SONGWRITERS HALL OF FAME. He was born in 1945 and has been doing music since the '50's. Of course, he sings, plays guitar, but also, did you know?...the  keyboards, saxaphone, drums, harmonica and ukulele....and, has done many live performances, as well as recordings with these other instruments.
He's 79 today in 2014 and is still performing two or three times a week. But, sorry to say all the performances are over in Europe, go HERE. Jan

Getting 'Sauced' At THE PIG BAR Last Night...JAZZ And Pig...Delicious

by pedroreyna cc, see link
You know, I just love great live music...JAZZ with my BBQed pig and that rich drippy, messy kinda BBQ sauce, don't you? So, last night was especially special at THE PIG BAR in Olympia, WA. You should have been there, with the appreciating crowd that came out last night. There was jazz and pig ALL together last night mind you, my personal favorite...how can I lose, or you either, anyway?
Well, we can't that's all. The music started at 8 o'clock, went 'til 10. There was some really fine jazz played last night, all from THE D.C. JAZZ QUARTET. That's DON COHEN/vocals, DAVEN TILLINGHAST/guitar, MARK STOUT/trombone and of course, my Steve BARTLETT ON BASS. They'll be at The Pig Bar again next Tuesday, is that April 21st?...I think that's the right date...anyway, remember each Tuesday night. O.K?...At The Pig Bar......FOR JAZZ. And, I'll be there,...wouldn't miss it.
Oh, By the way...I heard cheering more than once last night.
For those with their own wheels...an easy, gentle, slow ramp to the bar upstairs [where the band is] is all ready from the restaurant part of The Pig Bar, called SOUTHBAY BBQ. I had no problems at all. Bathrooms are BIG and wheelchairs and people can get inside all at the same time. Come on out and see the show, have some food and a cold beer if you like...here's the MENU. I know Tuesday is Taco night plus BBQ too. Kitchen's open 'til 9 pm. Jan

'Turkeys and Spring Has Sprung'...BBQing With BLUZZZ Queen SHELLY ELY

'MOD Jazz' 2008, by J.A. Rose-Bartlett cc, see below
Hey, it's spring after all,  isn't it? Feels like it during the day alright, but sure chills down in the evenings and nights...we still need our wood stove. AND, Since it's spring and all Steve went and bought 4 baby turkeys last week...little itty-bitty beautiful golden colored ones [they were only 1 day old]. So, guess what? We're turkey foster parents for awhile as those chicks grow some golden feathers, and they just love that wood stove at night. But, not only that, Steve fusses over them alittle, [me too] and we give them warm hot water bottles during night. They seem to love it and we think that they'd stay warm enough without the stove. If you decide to try this at home. [Oh yea, Shelly has two chickens she doesn't need and is giving them to us. Steve was talking to our chickens this morning...telling them to be nice to the two new hens that will be here later this week.]
Guess where we were yesterday...? We were at MS. BLUZZZ herself....SHELLY ELY's house. There were lotsa music folks there that I didn't know...BUT, Let me tell you who I recognized and got to 'mingle' with...well, O.K., friends that came over and said 'Hi' and I got a BIG hug,....let's see, there was, of course, SHELLY ELY/vocals and SHERYL CLARK/sax, KENNY WILLIAMSON/drums [looks good], smiling DYLAN LANNY ENGLAND/drums, TOM MURPHY/drums was quiet, TERRY JAE/bass had a good time,  DAVE BRAY/guitar was smiling, always beautiful 'Mojo' or MARY JO TRYHOLM /vocals, and Steve BARTLETT ON BASS, who was jumping up and down, you know, that kinda happy dance he does when he's playing and loving the music with lotsa folks that he knows, that he'd played with over the years, that I didn't know...two or three keyboard people, another sax, a harp player, at least three more guitsarists, several onlookers, a few dogs,..a big bonfire to keep warm,[it was really needed when the sun went down]...AND all kinds of food. I ate too much and had a great time...the music was excellent, and not too loud. Nice to see so many friends smiling and having so much fun together. Jan

'Yawn'.Tonight,.I'm Going To Bed Early....'Oh Look....There's More JAZZ Tonight In Olympia At RYMTHM AND RYE

Steve and Jan Rose-Bartlett
O.K....Grab your ax, let's go...BARTLETT ON BASS will be making an appearance tonight,[me too] at the new RYMTHM AND RYE, you know, it's the formerly THE ROYAL LOUNGE in Olympia, WA., that's downtown at 311 North Capital. They're having a JAZZ jam tonight. We don't know the exact time that all the fun starts yet...but, there's food there...I just know it. BUT, what kind of food? Who knows?...I'm sure it's just delicious. O.K? This place has just changed owners...remember everything's still new...the food, the start times for music...but, NOT the music..
i remember, 'the Royal' has an easy access for you guys who need that...no stairs..yeah. It is a big open room with a bar, easy to get around, dance floor with lotsa people on it and a big stage There was a sound man too when Steve BARTLETT ON BASS played there with CARA CLARKE-POWERS/vocals and STEFAN ABUAN/guitar and a guest drummer DARLENE JONES in the band 'BE HEAR' way back in October, 2009. See HERE and a BUMP KITCHEN Party At The Royal Lounge, with MY [Yes, Jan, it was a long time ago]] darn drum machine HERE.
Anyway, we're going tonight, probably early. AND, Steve'll play AND since it;s a jam maybe, just maybe...I ah I'll get a dance or two with MY bassman. I laughed so hard this morning when I caught him practicing his SMOOTH 'Mr. Boombastic-Beanbastic' dancing moves...it's 'Waa-Laa' [spell?] MR. BARTLETTBASTIC, go  HERE
See you tonight sometime....let's say, ah..8ish Be sure and bring your ax. it's a jam. O.K? It'll be fun. Jan

Smooth JAZZ Was Great Last Night...Having Fun At THE PIG BAR

THE PIG BAR, see links
O.K....I'm giving you a full report on last night's jazz gig at DICKERSON's SOUTHBAY BBQ or just SOUTHBAY BBQ...or also known as THE PIG BAR.

It was cool, smooth with a happy crowd.... We [Steve and I] got there early, and the ramp to get upstairs for everyone with their own wheels was easy, gentle, wide AND smooth...or NO problem at all. The bathrooms big enough for wheelchairs with people at the same time [I know]....so come out and see this place, you guys that need special considerations It was worth the effort, time and besides it was fun too. O.K?
THE D.C JAZZ QUARTET will all be there again next Tuesday night from 8 to 10 pm, so that's a good time to show up and have a few cold beers, or some drinks, tacos or awesome BBQed pig, chicken, ribs...you know. MENU here AND listen to some wonderful jazz all at the same time.
The jazz was a hit, with BARTLETT ON BASS smiling the whole night. [I love to see that. Jan] D.R./tenor sax came in and sat in for a few tunes, thanks D.R., as well as SCOTT SANDERS/percussion. Steve and I have known Sanders for almost 20 years. A big pleasure and unexpected surprise for us both, and, thank you too Scott. Our Country singer friend, DON SUNN wants to hear great jazz, and will be there next week. BARTLETT talked to him this morning, after getting a frantic message from him last night when we got home...wondering where we were?...Just remember,... 619 Legion, downtown Olympia...it's got a pink neon Pig lit up over the door and delicious BBQed pig inside that door [we had a BBQed pulled pork sandwich...yes, delicious]...you can't miss it...see photo above.
BUT, I have to say...there was one little tiny-whiny [spell?] disappointment last night, I hate to mention it, but...I didn't dance at all last night, guess, I was just worn out from so much practicing yesterday afternoon at home. Read more HERE  Next time, I'll plan better...'cause I've learned some really SMOOTH moves from Mr. Boombastic or was it Mr. Beanbastic? Anyway, I was all worn out.
Members of this jazz foursome are..... Vocals/Don Cohen's FACEBOOK Page, guitar/Daven Tillinghast's FACEBOOK page, trombone/Mark Stout's FACEBOOK page, and BARTLETT ON BASS. They're known as the 'D.C. JAZZ QUARTET'. Watch for them O.K?...you'll have a great jazz time . Jan

Tonight's The Night....MY Night Out With My Sweetheart, Jazz AND Perhaps Some Dancing?

by Dicktay2000 cc, see link
'Ole ,You know, it's good to get out and get some excersize, my Doctor recommends it everytime I check in with her. 'Keep your body moving'....she says. 'O.K. Doc',...Tonight, Tuesday, April 8th, BARTLETT ON BASS's doing jazz and I'm going with him, yea...slow and smooth jazz. What? Did I say 'slow and SMOOTH' jazz? Yes, that's what I said.
Well, that reminded me of a video I saw recently...that had some slow and SMOOTH dancing. I haven't danced for years...'GEE, that'd be fun'...I know...so, while my Sweetheart bassman gos over some of the tunes we'll ALL enjoy tonight here at home, I'm gonna be practicing my 'dancing'. After all, Steve's on stage anyway...AND, he loves to see me having fun, when I get to go out with him. Let's see...where did I see that SMOOTH dancing video again?
Oh Yea...It's Mr. Boombastic..er almost...I mean 'Mr. Beanbastic' [thanks tejubhai1996] this is what the video page says: " Uploaded on Apr 28, 2009
This is a composition of Mr. Bean Videos on the song Mr. Boombastic By Shaggy" get your dancing shoes on...ready? Let's watch together. Jan.

Well, where's the smooth and slow jazz tonight, anyway? At SOUTHBAY BBQ [The Pig Bar] in Olympia, that's 619 Legion, downtown Olympia, from 8 to 10 pm. See you there. Jan

Always A BIG Man...'Our' MICKEY ROONEY Dies At Age 93

 classic film scans cc
Heard some sad news today, actor MICKEY ROONEY and HERE died yesterday Sunday, April 7th. He was 93 years old, died at home of 'natural causes'. Rooney became a very popular teenage charactor actor in the 30's. Seems he was loved by everyone. Found this story from THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE, but, there are several online news sites covering this news about Rooney.
Here's a quote from the Chicago tribune, as I said, everyone loved him and his acting and musical talent...." He was undoubtedly the most talented actor that ever lived. There was nothing he couldn't do," actress Margaret O'Brien said in a statement".
His parents were in vaudeville and Mickey's first on stage appearance was at 18 months of age.
Famous for his roles in 'National Velvet' [thanks historycomestolife], 'Boy's Town' [thanks ,Movieclips Classic Trailers] 'The Black Stallion' and 'Babes In Arms' [ thanks ClassicM]...I always loved his movies as a child and teenager. I remember him singing with JUDY GARLAND and HERE , and will find a video and post it.
Mickey Rooney's popularity reached all ages...my mother had met him in the '40's in Reno, Nevada, where she worked in a club. She always mentioned that fact when we saw him in his movies...so, he seemed like our very own Mickey Rooney somehow. He was friendly and polite to Mom, she was so impressed by this, always calling him a BIG caring man. Thank you Mickey, Jan
Here's a video from YOUTUBE with Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland singing together called 'MGM Musical Comedy Sketch' [ thanks TheManThatGetsAway]. This is what the video page says: " Published on Feb 17, 2013
 Show # 1"
