Miss Dennis's Charm School...Remember 1960's Fashion?

Vincent Boiteau cc

Oh my...I guess, I'm showing my age, with this 1960's fashion tour, ain't I? This, the fashion in the below video, was very funny to me and VERY serious to my mom, AND....Just the way I remember it. My Dad worked for SEARS back in 1964 when I was 14, my mother sent me to MISS DENNISs CHARM SCHOOL, located in Sears in Spokane, WA. We were taught just this kinda I thought stupid stuff... and, I hated it all. 'No Way, Mom'. Guess, I was already Hippie way back then ...my mother just didn't understand that, and very worried about me...she wanted to cure it right away...before it stuck, and effected my chances of finding a husband.  'Gee Mom, don't worry, will ya'. That was the way it was, 'Oh... Mom,...Look, I'm O.K. and married this really 'cool', 'groovy' bassman guy, named BARTLETT ..no worries. O.K?'...SMILE, Jan

In The Funk?....Oh,..JAMES BROWN Can Fix That Right Now

by cliff1066™ cc
Just wondering...Today I [Jan] was just wondering how all this funk-stuff started...anyhow? Asked BARTLETT, then went and read more online that JAMES BROWN was one of the founding fathers of funk, and his tune, [see at mpontvww], 'Cold Sweat' 1967, was the first true funk song. Well, I guess so.....WOW! That guy could do it all, couldn't he?...write, dance, sing, just look at those feet go, and the splits too? Amazing, AND,...he never missed a beat....cool...WOW Again.. What a showman. As you can tell...I love James Brown. Who doesn't?
It looks like he expected the same kinda showmanship outta his whole band...they're ALL doin' it when they're on stage with him. They did over 325 shows a year with that energy and style... Now, that's excellence and guts...right there. He was inducted into the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME in 1986, and ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE ranked him 7th in their 100 Greatest Artists of all time. He was in THE SONGWRITERs HALL OF FAME too in 2000. For more on funk legend James Brown go HERE, HERE, and more on YOUTUBE go HERE
----------------------
This is the video that started me wondering 'bout all this funk-stuff this morning...It's a cool video of JAMES BROWN and His band doing three songs on a T.V. program, called 'Soul Train', back in 1973...I remember that show well. I found it at MrThefunkmusicgame on YOUTUBE HERE. This is what it says about this video..."Uploaded on Aug 9, 2011

Yep...Playing For Change Is Worth It All...Keep The Dream Alive

by Loco Steve cc
O.K.....Yes, when I first saw this video...I cried [Jan],...O.K. I said it right up front, so we ALL know.
Well, for one, I just love this song and JOHN LENNON...see my story and Tribute to John Lennon Video with BARTLETT ON BASS in the fantastic band called WALTERs BIRTHDAY HERE
AND, there's even more too...and it's NOT because I'm just an old Hippie, 'cause I'm not, nor am I a weird kinda blue fairy-like gal either. But, Darn it all folks...there just MUST be more to life than to be the richest, or the prettiest, getting the most sex, be the most famous, the most powerful or most controlling.
Yes...It's a Dream...BUT, not an unrealistic one at all, in my way of thinking. AND, Remember, I've spent the past 2 1/2 years alone, in my room and have done a lot of dreaming and thinking. Thank you PLAYING FOR CHANGE and John Lennon's wife, YOKO ONO for keeping John's dream alive.
What Steve Bartlett says about this video..."I like it...I like it a lot".
Found this first on STUMBLEUPON. Here's Playing For Change performing the John Lennon tune 'Imagine' called 'Imagine Legend', with the whole world. Posted by Enzo De Leon on YOUTUBE.

Missing Ted Hall PhD....The Song Writer And DAKOTA RODEO

Steve and Jon at Tenino Smokehouse
My Steve has known singer/song writer JON BARONI/keys/harp/vocals for about 20 years. They have done many musical projects together. For example, years ago, BARTLETT worked on several tunes for that awesome musical team of JON BARONI and the late TED HALL PhD. Jon and Ted did the CD 'WAKE UP CALLS' together and I[Jan] was always glad to see my old friend, Ted being at the recording studio almost everytime when Steve layed down his bass lines for a recording.
When Ted died of a heart attack on July 13th, 2010. My story HERE. The loss was deeply felt by Steve and I. Ted did lyrics for tunes, Jon the music, as I remember Ted saying once. What a great team, BARONI/HALL. Miss you Ted.
Hall was also a student of RSE in Yelm, WA., I [Jan] knew him from that arena too...'cause we were old friends since 1994, even before I met and fell in love with my bassman and hubby Steve in Nov. 1995. Some tunes that I remember JON BARONI/TED HALL creating and my Steve Bartlett laying down the bass lines for over the years were: 'Dakota Rodeo' a tribute to John Lennon, 'Last Night I Had A Dream', about George Harrison. Another meaningful/beautiful song of Baroni/Hall's was 'Sacred Ground' that Steve worked on way back when.
Ted's web page was called BIOFACTALREVOLUTION...Ted posted information about several of his interests there...one being music with his friend Jon Baroni...it was a fun place to visit. I miss it. For more on Theodore Hall PhD. go HERE.
To see a video with photos, an audio and video clip of Ted Hall singing his 'Raised On God And Country' song which he put in public domain on July 4th, 2010 [9 days before he died] and hear his reasons why, the beautiful lady on the mandolin is MARY CANN PIPER, also a friend of ours...go to sparky2day HERE This is what it says at this video site..."Uploaded on Oct 25, 2010
Theodore Dana Hall 1943 - 2010. A dedication video. Compiled by Michelle Rogge"...Thank you, Jan
Yesterday, song writer TOD LEMKUHL/guitar/vocals also in Walter's Birthday, sent me some video links and that reminded me again of Ted. One of the videos was THE WALTERs BIRTHDAY Band doing an old song by that team of BARONI and HALL. 'Dakota Rodeo' had been created years ago and my Steve had done the bass ...such an inspiritual tune, that's decated to JOHN LENNON,...so of course, I remembered Ted Hall again today...miss you Ted. Thank you. Jan
--------------------------------
Here's 'Dakota Rodeo' by BARONI and HALL, found on Liqdsoulcoffee on YOUTUBE. Thank you Liquid Soul Coffee Roaster's for posting this, recorded on Aug. 28th, 2010 [only one month after Ted's death] at Liquid Soul Coffee Roasters in McKenna, WA. WALTERs BIRTHDAY band members are Steve BARTLETT ON BASS, TOD LEMKUHL/guitar/vocals, SCOTT ERCOLIANI/drums with singer/song writer JON Baroni/keys/harp/vocals.

SAM COOKE 'A Change Is Gonna Come'...Yes,.He Had A Dream

 by Piano Piano! cc
SAM COOKE was active in the civil right movement back in the 60's, before his death in 1964 at the young age of 33. This song says it all very well and supports MARTIN LUTHER KING JRs dream and day today...it was first done by Sam Cooke, and covered by so many others.
Cooke widely influenced the rise of soul music in the 50's and 60's. 'A Change Is Gonna Come' '64 is a beautiful song that showed me his dream/hope for the civil rights movement and for all people and I've posted the lyrics below [they were found on Rallufl1986, link below]. To read more about Sam Cooke, go HERE and HERE
---------------------
Found SAM COOKE doing 'A Change Is Gonna Come on YOUTUBE at Ralluf1986....

---------
lyrics....
I was born by the river
In a little tent
And just like the river
I've been running ever since

It's been a long, long time coming
But I know a change gonna come
Oh, yes it will

It's been too hard living
But I'm afraid to die
I don't know what's up there beyond the sky
It's been a long, long time coming
But I know a change gonna come
Oh yes it will

I go to the movie, and I go downtown
Somebody keep tellin me "don't hang around"
It's been a long, a long time coming,
But i know a change gonna come
Oh yes it will

Then I go to my brother
I say brother help me please
But he winds up knocking me
Back down on my knees

There's been times that I thought
I wouldn't last for long
But now I think I'm able to carry on
It's been a long, long time coming
But I know a change is gonna come
Oh, yes it will

Yeah...More Rehearsing Tonight....I'm In A Cool Fantasy

recent photo BARTLETT by Sheila Karnes
Don't wake me...I'm in a really cool fantasy....Oh, it's 'EARTH WIND AND FIRE's 1977 'Fantasy'. This was one of BARTLETT ON BASS's favorite groups way back when. He's rehearsing it tonight for tomorrow's exciting rehearsal with his high school music buddy and now music instructor MIKE KARNES/guitar/bass. Along with the tune, they'll be doing 'How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You', done by MARVIN GAYE. I always think of JAMES TAYLOR when I think of this song, but Marvin.... did it before Taylor.
Tomorrow's special as Steve and Mike'll get photos and create a video too...I'll post more when they say it's O.K....O.K?...well, sure it is...you'll love it, I promise...just wait and see. O.K?
Thanks for reading my stuff. Jan...and Steve too, of course. Bye for now.

JEFF MORGAN...The' Force=Groove' is Always With You...THE BASS JEDI

Jeff Morgan The Bass Jedi, see link
Well it's  been a great year...2012, that is. And, one of the awesome reasons for this is... JEFF MORGAN/THE BASS JEDI. He's a bassman's bassman. My Steve just praises Jeff up one side and down the other...AND, Thursday nights have become very special...'cause that's when Steve and Jeff get together and have some real bass-fun.
When BARTLETT ON BASS gets home after being with the bass Jedi, he's ALL SMILES...yea,..you know.. with one of his BIG beautiful smiles of his. He brings home sandwiches, fries or ice cream and we both get treated...he tells me ALL 'bout his wonderful night with Jeff as we eat the treats...and then, he gets out his bass and shows me what he learned from Jeff that night. His eyes sparkle...he's in bass heaven , that's all, and it shows. I just love it. Bass lessons from a real Jedi...Steve loves it too.
Jeff teaches many of the techniques that he learned from VICTOR WOOTEN.
