So, this morning, I click on their site and found this story about the really weird ideas folks had in 1836 about our moon. Wow. 'We've come along way, baby'. Not only did they believe in some weird life on the moon in the 1800's, but really strange moon people, animals and other stuff too. ['Wonder what the folks in 300 years from now will think of us?'...bet, there'll be lots of our mysteries fully understood. Cool. Jan].
Here's some examples of ideas from 1836, that came from some old colored, well, hand-tinted anyway, lithographs from the SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTE's Image Collection:
So, the folks way back in 1836 not only thought 'astronomers' had already been to the moon in a ship "supported by hydrogen balloons", but that they had already met moon-people, and that moon life was made up of
"hairy men with wings" and "naked insect women",.... some "unicorns". And more..., "batmen", "moon bison" and "moon maidens"...go HERE to read the whole story.
This story reminded me, once again, that it's very cool to have an 'open mind' BUT, 'not so open that my brains fall out'...So, I'll BE REAL. That's what I [Jan] learned. Thanks for reading my stuff. Jan
